When do kittens decide not to climb curtains?

Getting new kittens this week, 12 weeks old. They don't climb curtains at their current home as there are none. We however have two long pairs and I'm worried they will climb them and get stuck. We can take the curtains down to begin with, but would like them back up at some point soonish! Do I need to train the kittens not to climb them? If so, how? Or will they not bother after a a while?
Complete newbie to kitten owning, sorry for all the probably silly questions!

Not all kittens climb curtains and you only have to remove them a few times from 6ft in the air before they realise that they can't get down Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/08/2017 11:59

Congratulations!

The won't get stuck, they'll shred them. Sorry.

WellWhoKnew · 20/08/2017 12:04

Erm.....my six year old still bombs up the curtains.

BossyBitch · 20/08/2017 12:06

They stop by themselves when old age mellows them out or weakens them beyond the ability to climb. For mine this happened at about 16 years of age. Sorry.

Here's my last foster cat, she's six. In her defence that gave her a much better view of the garden.

Ours are 15 weeks, all curtains floor length and they bat around the bottom of them but no climbing - so far.

They are perfectly capable of climbing - have done some intrepid attempts up kitchen drawers - but no interest in the curtains. So they don't all do it and any attempts will be discouraged with water pistols in this house

My old cat Nev lived to 19 and climbed the curtains till the day ge died

Sorry😹

Butterymuffin · 20/08/2017 12:18

Mine climbed till they were about 9 months - a year old. You can't stop them doing it. Just accept shredded curtains and get more when they're older.

I am always rescuing my 15 year old cat from being stuck half way up the curtains.

IrritatedUser1960 · 20/08/2017 12:20

My other elderly cat likes to shred the stair carpet Grin

shushpenfold · 20/08/2017 12:21

Our two used to climb up the textured wallpaper! (Spidercats) Curtain climbing stopped once they were allowed to go outside (6 months) as it was far more fun there.

Once a climbing cat - always a climbing cat. I've had lots of cats and none of them climbed until I had my latest cat. She doesn't climb curtains anymore because she is bigger and has nowhere to go once she gets to the top as the gap is now too small for her to fit in. She does still climb though. Her favourite places in the house are always high up - she is currently sat on the top of a very tall bookcase. I've seen her on top of neighbours roofs and she sleeps in trees (and that includes the Christmas Tree) I swear she thinks she is a monkey.

Not all cats climb, it's the luck of the draw and your won't know if your kittens are going to climb the curtains till you get them home.

linspins · 21/08/2017 08:24

I will be trying to dissuade them from climbing, whilst they are still small then! Hope ours aren't too climby, I like our curtains...😁

One of ours actually pulled the curtains down, pole and all, leaving gaping torn holes in the plaster around where the screws had been. We had to put in new plasterboard.

I hope you're not houseproud.

Our Bernard is 14 - he is a huge fluff ball who loves dangling from the living room curtains. Unfortunately, due to his size, he has also dislodged the curtain rail and half the wall with it. He has added a lived-in, distressed look to my otherwise immaculate house. I have reconciled myself to never having posh curtains. He has also managed to provide my very expensive Persian rug with an antiqued patina of time that is very much on trend even though I've only had it for 6 months. Good job I absolutely adore him.

Ifailed · 21/08/2017 12:38

they will stop doing it once you stop being bothered. Then they'll do something else that does bother you.

Sorry about the double post.

Never mind curtains,my cat used to climb the actual wall! Heaven knows how she managed it,but she would shin up the bit at the corner,on the angle,IYSWIM,when she was having her mad half hour every evening. She doesn't do it now she's a bit older. I remember my late DM wanted to get some new curtains for years, but kept putting it off because her 2 cats had persistently climbed up the inside of them and shredded them to bits. One of them died of leukaemia at the age of 9,and her sister seemed to calm down a lot once she was an 'only cat',so DM went ahead and got her new curtains.

Spangles1963 · 21/08/2017 17:16

notangelinajolie Your post reminded me of our last cat. She actually got onto the roof of our 3 storey high block of flats a few times. She would go out on the balcony, jump up on the balcony railing, which was about 2 inches wide, then jump from there onto the roof. I nearly had heart failure the first time I saw her wandering around on the roof. She was such a dare devil.

BillywigSting · 21/08/2017 17:23

I had two cats, one never even attempted to climb the curtains, the other still tried when she was post stroke and riddled with arthritis. Climbing cat was much much worse after catnip but I think she might just have been a bit of a nutter tbh.

Yogagirl123 · 21/08/2017 17:30

It's a long time since I had a kitten, but my goodness I can remember them being extremely proficient at curtain climbing, and trouser climbing when I tried to feed them! The first Christmas was interesting too! They were so sweet, the curtains looked great at night, but in the morning, I could see light shining through the holes. Have fun OP, very envious, enjoy.

LemonRedwood · 21/08/2017 17:32

The curtains weren't so much a problem as getting tangled up in the clothes horse with mine!
