Hi everyone. Smile

We adopted 2 beautiful 8 week old kittens a week ago (tomorrow) - They seem to be settling in well, but I'm worried about their feeds.

I was told by many people before we adopted them that they will eat roughly 4 pouches of wet food a day, each.
It also states this on the side of their box of food.

We put our wet food twice a day - it barely gets touched. I also put out biscuits too, but again, they barely get touched.

Every now and again, I will go and put them with their food and they'll eat a bit, but that's about it. I'm not sure if they're eating while I'm sleeping at night, but it doesn't seem like anything has gone in the morning.

We started feeding them food that they didn't eat at their last home, so I thought it might have been that, so after a few days, we switched them back to what they were on and they seemed to eat the other food (that they wasn't used to) more.

I've stilled noticed that they both have stool movements, so I'm assuming that's a good sign.

Should I be worrying? Can anyone help.

Thank you.

Hi, if they are active and healthy then I would not be concerned. It's still a short time since you adopted them so they will still be settling in. 4 pouches and dry food is a lot for an 8 week old kitten to eat. Congrats on your new additions!

4 pouches is a huuuge amount of food. My adult cat only has 1 pouch plus a handful of biscuits. I think like with babies, if they're weeing and pooing and gaining weight that's fine. Also cats notorious for going off their food when stressed. Mine barely ate for weeks when we moved house.

Four pouches? Are they lion cubs? They have tiny stomachs at that age. Little and often for feeding.

After much research today, I realised I was feeding them completely wrong. In a morning, I would give them a whole pouch of wet food each, then leave it all day hoping they'd eat it.

They didn't.

I've realised that they need tiny portions, often.

I gave them a teaspoon of wet food each this afternoon and they ate it. I also realised that the remains of their wet food should be thrown out after half an hour. Doh. It's common sense really, eh?

Thankfully I've learnt now.
Poor kitties!

You can store opened pouches in the fridge for a couple of days to avoid waste. You might find they require you to bring it to room temperature before serving though!

You can zap food for a few seconds in the microwave. This makes it more appetising for them too.

Thanks for the microwave tip.
I totally used it. Grin

They're just beautiful.
