Please help - liver tumour

I'm absolutely devastated, my 8 year old Bengal cat has been off his food for a few weeks but he can be fussy so I just put it down to that. He was very lethargic and seemed poorly yesterday so I took him to the vets. Vet found a 'mass' and has done some blood tests, it looks it might be a tumour on his liver. My last cat died of that and I was heartbroken, I was also desperate to save him and I think he probably suffered longer because I didn't have the guts to say goodbye. I always said I wouldn't make that mistake again.

So, the vet said because he now hasn't eaten in 48 hours and won't drink it's likely that things are quite advanced. She said we might need to think about doing the kind thing.

He is currently hiding in his little house and hasn't moved all day, won't eat or drink. He looks very poorly.

I suppose I'm asking what I should do? I cannot let him suffer, I won't do it again. But should I get more tests to confirm? The vet seemed to think there was little point but maybe a scan would put my mind at rest?

Any thoughts? I've got two very young children (DS2 is 4 months) and am crying all over the place just now.

I'm so sorry but if it's a palpable mass it must be quite big.

I'd probably wait for confirmation before taking the big decision.

Hand hold. I agree with Fluffy. Cuddle him and let him know he's loved.

If he's that poorly I'm not sure a scan is appropriate any more. If there were options - then maybe. Hand and paws to hold here, and hugs. Flowers

I got DH to phone the vet again (I was a bit upset when I spoke to her), she does seem to be of the view that scans and further 'diagnostic' stuff is a bit pointless given how poorly he is. She said they will probably just confirm what we know but treatment options would be very limited because he is too ill for surgery etc, even if that were possible.

We're taking him back in the morning to have a proper chat about it, but I'm preparing for the fact that he might not be coming home.

It's such a shock though, he was fine this time last week and now he seems at deaths door. Vet said cats are very good at 'hiding' illness until it's too late unfortunately.

He's been such a good friend, we've been together longer than me and DH and he has seen me through my worst and best days. I know this is part of pet ownership but it hurts so much.

Your vet, although not able to make a final diagnosis without further tests, is indicating the likely outcome. You know your cat better than anyone and are best placed to decide if he has quality of life or is too sick to carry on. If he needs to go, it is heartbreaking, but you have to be kind to him, not to you.
It's an awful thing to have to decide, but you have the choice, he doesn't.

How are things @mistermagpie? Thinking of you here xxx
