Is it normal for their health to suffer while they are nursing their kittens? I am fostering her and her kittens and don't know what her health was like before she had them.

She is thinner than usual. A little less so now, but you can clearly feel her spine and her ribcage.

She shits a lot - at least 4 times a day if not more, the record so far is 8 - and it's loose and (sorry if TMI) usually pale beige colour. She just produced bowel movement number 7 so today she may break her record.

She drinks a lot of water. She has a huge appetite and is almost desperate for food but when I let her dictate how much she ate she became ill and listless after a couple of days. She's not fond of dry, and I leave a bowl of that out all day and she picks at it. She has 4 wet food meals a day but she tries to steal food from me, and physically attempts to open the fridge/cupboards so I have to shut her out of the kitchen.

If she wasn't feeding five kittens I'd suspect hyperthyroidism or something else, but she's a young cat.

My plan is to see if she recovers once the kittens are weaned - they are 4 and a half weeks, but if people think I need to take her to a vet sooner I will. It's just a bit stressful for her because we have to take all six of them together.

You need to take her to the vet before the kittens are weaned. She's not well.

She needs to see a vet as she obviously ill. It's not normal for any cat to poo up to 8 times a day. Also excessive thirst & appetite are signs of thyroid issues which can affect cats of any age, it's just more common in older cats. While it might be stressful taking all 6 to the vets it's better than getting up one morning and finding she has died.

InvisibleCities · 16/08/2017 19:48

I'll call the vet in the morning.

That's good - hope she's okay, poor girl!

I did take her to the vet after she overate and obviously felt ill (just remembered I mentioned that here under a NC) and the vet said she wasn't dehydrated and gave her a worming tablet, and didn't seem overly concerned. Her energy came back a day later but it's just this ongoing thing of her wanting to eat a lot but not seemingly able to handle the volume she wants so I don't let her (but she does still eat more then a non-nursing cat would) and a lot of small loose bowel movements.

*Also by thinner than usual, I meant thinner than a normal cat her size, not that she's lost weight. She's gained a bit, but is still thin.

I just don't want anyone to think that the poor love has been at death's door without me caring! I will definitely ring the vet in the morning and see what they say though.

How did you get on at the vets?

InvisibleCities · 18/08/2017 17:58

We've decided Hills Science dry kitten food only for four days, no wet food, no fish, no treats, to see if she has food sensitivities and if there's no improvement by Monday morning I'll take her in and they'll do tests. She seems to be in good spirits aside from being put out that I've withdrawn all her favourite things. She is using the litter tray less already, but then she's taking in less food, so we'll see. I'm keeping a close eye on her.

What wet food was she eating?

InvisibleCities · 18/08/2017 18:14

Basic Felix kitten pouches. I'd also give her fresh meat/fish sometimes, but she absolutely loves tinned tuna in water. I've been told to stop giving her that, apparently it can block absorption of a certain mineral cats need? Also she is addicted to Dreamies, and I've stopped giving her those. She didn't have loads, only 5/6 a day, but they might be causing issues. So dry food only for now to see if her bowel movements start to look healthier.

My cat had this issue, however got the all clear from the vet. She was eating a lot of wet food, thinks like Felix/Whiskas which I now realise ate rubbish. She dramatically improved once I made a switch to good dry food only (Royal canin) and after a course of pro-biotics and fish oil supplements
