Cheerio old girl

Hi.

Not quite sure why I am posting maybe other than sharing with likeminded souls.

15 years ago we adopted a wee cat from the SSPCA. Despite being warned she was semi-feral and would never be a lap cat after many weeks of gentle care we managed to get her out from under the sofa (she has been in a very small box for some months) and she very gradually staked her claim on our laps.

She has been with us through two house moves and two babies and has been marvellous throughout.

3 years ago she had radioiodine treatment for hypothyroidism (I got some wonderful advice here) and then she developed idiopathic cystitis. In more recent time she lost her sight and became very thin.

Initially the vet could see no reason other than just being old but last week found a large mass. In the last week we have hand fed her, cleaned up endless mess in the house and sat outside with her while she warmed her bones in the sun.

We made the decision to end her days with more dignity than her illness was allowing and she was PTS today.

We think she was about 17 and I really hope we gave her as much as she gave us.

Flowers

Well done, you did the right thing by her. I hope you have many happy memories of her in the good times.

Flowers you know you've done the right thing, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. It's very sentimental but the Rainbow Bridge Poem is still a nice idea at times like this. Take care.

Thank you.

We really did feel it was the right thing to do but I still worried whether we had done enough. Deep down I know we did but you still wonder

It's better to wonder if you made the decision a little early than to know you waited too long. It sounds as though her quality of life was fading fast and as you say she was losing dignity which is very stressful for cats. You did the right thing.

Flowers sounds like she was very lucky to have found you, RIP old girl.

It sounds like you gave her a wonderful life, and you've done the right thing by her now

Passmethecrisps · 14/08/2017 20:50

chemenger you are quite right and this is what we were worried about. She was always such a little lady that it was hard to believe that she wouldn't be upset about soiling in the house.

We decided at the end of last week that it would be today but her deterioration over the weekend was so awful that it has been torture.

Thank you all for being so understanding. I have often sought advice from this wee corner of MN

Flowers sorry for your loss.

cozietoesie · 14/08/2017 20:51

You did enough for her.

I'm very sorry. It's a hard hard thing.

Vinorosso74 · 14/08/2017 20:52

Aw sorry she's gone. She was clearly well loved and lived a happy life with you Flowers
