Kitten's play fighting. Normal?

It's in the title really.

We adopted 2 beautiful little 7 week old kitties yesterday.

You're probably going to think I'm mental for asking, but I just needed my mind putting at ease.

Since they arrived yesterday, they play fight a lot. It causes one of them to yelp at times and it worries me a little.

This is normal, right?

Also our make growls at his sister if she tries to eat her food when he's eating his. I have a double bowl and put wet food in both sides. Our male is quite over protective.

Any tips?

Thanks.

GrinGrin Icequeen

We opened insurance with Pet Plan tonight. I'm not risking something bad happening and then being hit with a huge bill. Shock

Check out YouTube for videos of play fighting - shows how rough it can look while being perfectly ok.

We are with Pet Plan too and can't fault them. Fingers crossed you won't need it though! Mine are big fluffy ginger boys who don't know their own strength sometimes!

You're supposed to change food gradually. Might be the change of food that's done it. You will probably get liquid wormer that is given at 2 week intervals. I didn't use flea treatment until they started going outside. There wasn't any sign of fleas when the vet checked them just after we got them at 8 weeks.

Mine were neutered and chipped at just over 4 months and have insurance through tesco

Although mine fight with each other they have never caused the other an injury

The vomiting will almost definitely be the sudden change of food; ideally get hold of what they were eating before and gradually introduce whatever you'd like to feed them instead (so 80% old, 20% new for a day or two , then 70% old 30% new etc.). Also, they can get sick if stressed, and taking kitties away from their Mum and litter mates is stressful for them. So don't worry too much about a bit of vomit unless they start looking ill.
Fighting is normal; their Mum would normally keep them in check at this age by nipping them if they get too rough, so make sure you step in and tell them off if they're hurting each other. They need to learn.

This is one of my boys sporting his "poodle leg" after suffering a nasty bite from his brother!

Never had a small kitten vomit, but could be change of food as the others have said.

7 weeks is quite young, I agree, but I thought 8 weeks was standard age to rehome them. Although breeders tend to go for 12 weeks. I've had both and it didn't harm them. As long as they are eating properly they'll be fine.

Re the play fighting. It can be quite rough. They'll also establish who's the boss of them two. Signs might be subtle, but they'll settle down.

Rookie mistake. Blush

After researching tonight, I realised it would most likely be the sudden change in food. Poor babies. I will try get them their usual food tomorrow. Smile

Thank you everyone for such wonderful help and advice.

Mine coped brilliantly with change of food but one vomits because she eats too much too fast and then rushes off to play after.

We have had to go with really small portions frequently and build up slowly - she lets us know when it's too much as there's another vomit to tell us. It's just as well she's cute.
