Cat peed on brand new bed!!!

Argghhh I cannot believe it! Bed arrived yesterday and it hasn't even been slept in yet. My DH is going to freak!

This is the second brand new bed in the 7 years we have had the cats that one, or both, of them has pissed on it and ruined it!

Why the hell are they doing this? They never do it to the kids beds, new sofas etc. Just our beds. This ones not even been slept in yet. It's a memory foam mattress so the piss has probably sunk all the way in. Will it go mouldy inside?!?!

I have blotted it and sprayed it with some bio spray stuff that is supposed to take away the smell, but how can I stop them from doing it again?

I'm trying to hide it from DH - luckily we are still sleeping in our old bedroom with our old bed. He hates the cats already because they scratched our dining chairs, our sofa, our new carpet, bring mice inside and puke all the time, as well as swipe food off our plates. He would love me to regime them. I refuse but it's getting harder to justify 😫

New memory foam mattresses smell odd. they are probably just trying to make it smell familiar. My girls have never weed on my bed but I have still got a really good waterproof cover on the mattress. It was about £60 from JL, but much cheaper than a new mattress. It's a temperate regulating one. So very comfy to sleep on.

They mark what's theirs, so your bed is theirs but obviously the kids aren't.

They don't like change though, we're reprinting the hallway & ours has pissed in a corner to cheer himself up.

The fucking cat has got up there and pissed on the mattress again! My husband is going to hit the roof!
I've locked the cat that did it outside. No idea what to do. I cannot have her doing this every day. I have ordered a waterproof mattress cover - bed hasn't even been slept in yet!

Toddler can you please tell me which mattress protector you have?

Cats need to maintain a consistent scent profile in their home. When the scent profile is disrupted - by redecorating or new furniture, cats can become very anxious about the new smell and need to scent mark over it to make it smell of 'home' again - it's the same reason that they cheek-rub on everything.

Don't punish your cat - it's doing this because it's anxious. Wash the area with biological washing solution and use a feliway spray on the bed to normalise its new smell and discourage the cat from trying to do this herself.

Don't know how to link it. But it's the Temperature regulating waterproof one from John Lewis. Doesn't rustle or make you sweat. Just feels like a sheet.

My girl cat went through a phase of this I also used a waterproof cover- just a cheap one - and it seemed to put her off. Once she had gone off the area I put sheets and a duvet on top, she has never (touch wood) done it since. Good luck- it is awful, I really feel your pain.

stonecircle · 12/08/2017 09:53

Toddler - that sounds brilliant. Am about to buy a new bed for one of our dcs and one of our cats has been known to pee on mattresses. I didn't realise it was possible to get a waterproof mattress cover that didn't rustle or make you sweat so I will try one of the JL ones.

Sympathies op! Flowers

Stone. Neither did I! It's expensive but the mattress was £500 so worth it. My girls have never peed on the bed but I was worried they might not like the memory foam smell, or would want to place mark. Fortunately they were fine with it.

Decoratingsucks · 14/08/2017 10:43

Just been told by the decorator today that the cat also peed up the wall the other day?!?! I didn't know female cats sprayed,

So is this stress or territory marking and how do I stop it before my husband banishes the cats from the house?

It's most likely territory marking due to stress. If you've got a lot going on in the house with strange decorators in and out and new smells from furniture and paint she maya be feeling like her territory is less secure and all of her usual scent markers from rubbing and scratching are gone. Peeing is a way to strongly scent mark and get her territory smelling right again. Try taking a soft cloth, rubbing it against her cheeks and then on surfaces and new furniture. In the meantime I'd probably confine her to a safe room with food and litter tray for a day or two and reintroduce

DumbledoresApprentice · 14/08/2017 11:07

Posted too soon- reintroduce her to the rest of the house one room at a time like you would if you moved.

We have had workmen and decorators etc in for several months now. There has been no peeing until now.

I've bought a Feliway plug in and spray to see if that helps. The only place I can lock her away from people is in the conservatory but it's far too hot in there so I have had to allow her free reign. Hopefully all work will be finished by the end of this week.
