My cat is pregnant

Please no flaming for not having her spayed. Believe me, she was booked in twice and once the surgery flooded and the second time I had a huge family emergency and had to cancel. She's an indoor cat but my BIL let her into the garden while he was house sitting and well, here we are.

It's been ages since I've had newborn kittens (family cat had a couple of litters 20 odd years ago).

I have a big box ready and lined for her. I'm expecting her not to use it.

She's on a high calorie food recommended by the vet (Royal Canin Mother and Baby Cat) and is getting as much wet food as I can convince her to eat.

She's been dewormed and has routine flea drops (Stronghold) as prescribed by the vet.

Is there anything else I should be doing? What signs should I be watching for? We think she's about 6-7 weeks now.

You can still get her spayed now I think.

QuestionableMouse · 11/08/2017 19:38

Thanks but that's not something I'm comfortable with. I'm not 100% sure of the dates and she could be closer to full term than I think.

Most cats like somewhere dark and enclosed to give birth, like a cupboard or an inaccessible place in the back of the garage. Don't disturb her or she will move the kittens to somewhere totally inappropriate.
Kittens sell for high prices now, you probably won't have any difficulty finding them good homes, not before they're eight weeks old.

Have you got friends you can give them to?

NorthernLurker · 11/08/2017 22:20

I don't get how you can't be sure of dates but you know how this happened?
I think it's completely unacceptable that you've put your cat at risk of pregnancy by failing to spay her. What are you going to do about homing the kittens? And how will you ensure she doesn't get pregnant again?

McBounty · 11/08/2017 22:25

I'm with Northern - you should have a pretty good idea when they were conceived, surely?

I did my best to get her in, believe me. At one point I was ringing the vet every day to get her booked in again and they couldn't take her. She went to live at my sisters for nearly a month while I was getting some building work done and BIL let her out. Every other animal in my house is done, including the rabbit and Guinea pigs! She will be booked in ASAP once the kittens are weaned but now she's home she won't be going out unsupervised anyway.

None of the kittens will be sold for profit. I'm 100% committed to finding them good life time homes and they can stay with me for as long as it takes.

She has a covered box and is 100% a house cat. I have a feeling she'll want to have them under my bed because that's where she's taken to sleeping for now (when she's not sleeping on my feet!)

I know it's a bad situation but I'm trying to make the best of it.

I'd just keep them all. More the merrier.

Weedsnseeds1 · 12/08/2017 22:32

I understand why you don't feel comfortable with a spay at this point. She'll bed down somewhere when she's ready, normally a pretty smooth process, but keep an eye on things if you can and vet for any complications.
It's not an ideal situation, but good luck and I hope the kittens find good homes.
