Does no food night before op mean no H2O?

Hi, OH booked boy in for neutering tomorrow morning. They said on the phone no food after 9pm. I don't know if this means no water after 9pm too. It seems harsh to leave him overnight without any hydration.

Has anyone experience of this?

When Sparklingcat had her dental they said water was fine, don't know if it would be different.

NickMyLipple · 10/08/2017 21:03

I was told to take the water away when I woke up in the morning (6am ish)

BadlyParkedRangeRover · 10/08/2017 21:05

I'm humans it's water until 2 hours before

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2017 21:07

It's horrible when you get up in the morning and they are miaowing for food. I couldn't look her in the eye.

ChocolateCherries · 10/08/2017 21:07

My cat had an op recently. It was no food after 9pm but water was definitely fine.

No don't withhold water before an anaesthetic it can lead to dehydration.

Ok. Thanks. I'll leave water out, then. He shares space with a female cat (that is why we are neutering a little early as he appears to be developing very quickly). It will be the first time one is removed from the other. Girl looks for a nook away from him, but she responds when he cries for her.

Water is fine. Why aren't you getting them both done at the same time? If he is old enough to do then so is she.

Cailleach1 · 10/08/2017 22:37

He are two pictures. TCN, they are nearly 5 months old. The vet said 6 months was the best age. However, she seems a little behind him although they are the same litter. He is bigger and stronger. We figure we can give her a few more weeks. He seems to be developing quickly.

Yeah, DD had a general a couple of weeks ago. We were told no food after midnight, but she was to have 2 glasses of water at 6 am to keep her hydrated.

Iirc, with the cats, it was no food, but they could have water until 7 am?

thecatneuterer · 11/08/2017 00:17

OP. You need to tell your vet that he/she is behind the times. Four months is now the recommended age for neutering - even if they're small for their age.

We do it even younger on kittens that are to be homed. As long as they weigh at least 1kg then we can do it.

Cailleach1 · 11/08/2017 07:48

Oh gosh. I wish I knew that. This is obviously pressing as we have both a male and a female. They are well over 1kg. He is definitely over 2kg now (he was 1.8kg weeks ago) and she is near it, if not over it too.

I'll ask about getting her done.

How did it go today? And have you booked your girl in?

Cailleach1 · 11/08/2017 21:44

It went swimmingly for the boy today. OH came home with a fact sheet with things to watch out for. That he may be groggy. He is running around like the clappers with the girl. He has had dried food and half a wet pouch. Drinking as well. He was hungry as he didn't have anything to eat since 9pm yesterday. I'm going to leave out dried food for grazing soon. He had a pain relief that lasts for 48hrs and an antibiotic. I can see the small incisions on each testicle, which he lovingly cleans every so often. He was over 2.7kg today. and not even 5 months yet.

OH collected and talked to vet about doing the girl. Didn't book her in though. They said they could probably spay her a matter of days after we phone them. I'm a bit surprised as when we asked at appointments for shots they had said 6 months, but now seem to be more accommodating since we asked again about doing her. They only do weekday surgery, so we will decide this weekend when to book it. She seems so delicate in comparison to him. I wonder if I will have to keep her separate for a few days after the op. Her op is more serious than his minor snip and they play quite roughly We will have to bite the bullet certainly within the next fortnight, for sure.

Just want to thank you all and am grateful for your replies. And the info that they it is perfectly ok to do them before the 6 months.
