Bloody hoodlums!

Got 2 rescue cats on Sunday, lovely big boys, really coming along nicely and thundering around the house like small horses.

But...

They are furry hoodlums.

They keep tipping up their water bowl and litter tray (after a big poo). We'll put the big covered tray out for them tonight to see if that solves one issue, but does anybody know of an 'un-tippable' bowl that we can get? I know you can get suction ones for babies / toddlers etc, but DS could get round that at 1 year, so I'm sure a cat could! Been looking on Amazon, but don't really want to spend £15 on a bowl that's allegedly un-tippable but isn't. They are very big, weigh about 5kg each at 14 months so needs to be strong / heavy or is there another solution?

I use side plates, cheap to buy & they fit in the dw easily.

Do they have two trays? They might object to sharing.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/08/2017 20:24

I've got a baby suction bowl that I nicked from work. My two would never be able to shift it when stuck to the laminate. Maybe worth a try as very cheap.

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/08/2017 20:58

How about a house brick? Put the food in the frog, they'll never tip that! Probably for dry food only, wet would soak in.

Weedsnseeds1 · 10/08/2017 20:59

And photos please? I love a big cat!

We have two trays at the moment, one upstairs and one down, only the downstairs one seems to be used. The upstairs is a covered one, so was thinking of moving that downstairs in place of the uncovered and tippable one. I especially bought big, deep litter trays as they are such big cats I was worried about their bums hanging over the sides 😆. They don't seem to worry about sharing, they are brothers!

Maybe I'll try a suction one then (if only I'd kept DS's one!) and try the cheaper option first and if that fails, I'll nail it to the floor 😁

baby suction bowl is genius, I'm going to order some for Lucy who like to upturn her water bowl when she feels I'm taking to long to decant her breakfast

Been trying to post pics on my ipad, but it's being stubborn.

Felix, black and white

Beautiful boys Smile
My big boy clip clops at walking pace, galloping is thunderous!

Any chance your cats are perching on the edge of the box to do their business and tipping that way? One of mine sometimes does this, usually when the tray is due for a scooping or a top-up of litter and he is displeased with the conditions. He is a huge cat so even the XXL tray tips easily under his weight.

user1496777666 · 10/08/2017 21:42

Gorgeous cats btw Smile

Offler · 10/08/2017 21:57

Felix is the main suspect now, George has just done a lion size poo and was neat and didn't even try to bury it!

Perhaps I'll leave both trays in the kitchen tonight and see what the results are in the morning!

Lidl had covered trays for €10 about 2 weeks ago here in Ireland, I found they made a huge difference to the distribution of the litter.

Offler · 10/08/2017 22:11

I'm going to have to get used to their youthful exuberance! Our previous cats died at 15 so were quite sedate by then, one adopted us at around 2 years old (probably) and the other was a later adoptee at around 12, so they never played!

Still, my boys are now being spoilt, bought them a cat tree scratch post thing, a rustly tunnel and psychedelic mice (but they prefer the box the cat tree came in of course 😉)

That Felix looks like a trouble maker! Mind you, George may be feigning an innocent expression. They are lovely puddies.

You'll ruin your rug and it will be hard to clean with the food and water getting on it. Get a bit of lino or a rubber mat you can wipe clean. I got a wide dog bowl in Aldi a few weeks ago. It had a rubber ring on the bottom and doesn't slip so easily. Two heads can fit at the one time as well. One of mine always he is also thirsty when he sees his sister drinking.

Get the covered litter, but when introducing it just use the bottom tray on it's own first. This will help straight away if they use it as it has high walls that the ordinary one. The change won't be too much either.

Sorry for typos and gibberish. It is late.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/08/2017 08:44

I can't understand how small cats can manage to sound like a heard of elephants when they run round the house. Do they come with lead in their paws.

Offler · 11/08/2017 10:07

These boys definitely seem to have lead paws!

And they are gorgeous boys, thank you all ☺.

Last night was quite successful, George used the uncovered tray and was neat, Felix used the covered one and appears to be a digger, but the cover contained it nicely. So just the water bowl issue to solve!

I don't understand why a big ceramic bowl the type that people use for guinea pigs wouldn't do. Available in every pet shop. Or you could get a fountain if you fancy spoiling the fluffy bastards.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/08/2017 10:26

I've got a top entry tray and that is brilliant at containing litter.

Weedsnseeds1 · 11/08/2017 10:34

toddler with my boy anyway, you get the I initial scrabbling while he gains traction / builds up kinetic energy, then he's off at the speed of light, including bounding like a cheetah, interspersed with a bit of leaping in the air and landing on all four feet like a springbok. A 7kg animal racing around like that makes a fair bit of noise!
He can be utterly silent when he chooses, as the mice round here know to their cost.
He normally walks quietly, but when he's bored / put out about something, he does the clip-clop walk and you can hear him. Also stomps up and down stairs like a petulant teenager if he's not getting his own way!!

Offler · 11/08/2017 18:46

Suction bowl failure, won't stick to the lino, and I fear trouble would just flip the mat if I stuck it to that! Next I shall try a wide bottomed bowl with rubber seal at the bottom 😊 and after that, if needed, a much heavier ceramic bowl than we have currently!

How about one of these? Or check out the raised dishes:

I love big cats, yours are gorgeous!

Penfold007 · 15/08/2017 14:41

Pen prefers a covered loo, Fold likes an open tray set on a puppy pad. For bowls just use nice heavy ceramic ones
