Best cat litter ever - cats do not agree

I usually use a gravelly litter with tiny blue bits in it. Went to pick up a bag and they didn't have any so out of desperation I thought I'd give wooden pellets a try.

Had a bit of a panic when I dropped some on the floor and they made a clatter like dry food, cats came running only to be disappointed.

But it's amazing. It doesn't clump, just sort of disintegrates into a sawdust type thing so it's easy to spot the new from the old, and I also found it covers smell really really well. With the old one (with blue "smelly" crystals) you'd know instantly if they'd shit in it but not this one. I love it, and have been buying it for a few weeks now.

But why does one of them not like it??? Instead, they'll shit just next to it. It's so bizzare. Do I ned to put some of the old stuff in with it or something?

Could you put the gravelly stuff in one half, or one corner, and then gradually put less and less in?

Ours refuse anything but the wooden stuff, and though we can always get it now, they were a blimmin nightmare for a while when we could only get the clumping stuff. They hated the feel of it on their feet. They'd sort of tip toe over it, shaking their feet as they went.

OH I I hate the wood pellets. My cats manage to carry it all over the place. I also can't stand the smell of the wood. I use the white crystals and it's great. You can still smell poos of course but I would far rather that as then I know to lift them out immediately. Can't smell the urine and it goes yellow so you know what is clean and what is dirty.

I'm with your cats on this one op. We tried wooden pellets and the litter tray stank. We scoop out clumps and solids every day and do a full change at least once a week. We found it was really difficult to remove the wee.

silentpool · 04/08/2017 10:09

I do a mixture of the clumping clay stuff and the wood pellets. Seems to keep down the smell and doesn't annoy Fussy Paws.

Lostbeyondwords · 04/08/2017 13:02

See, MeanAger, mine tend to carry the gravelly stuff everywhere but not the pellets! How weird.

Paddypants I do the same routine for changing/scooping. There must be different wooden pellet types about, there is a slight smell when you put them in but it's more like a saw mill than a litter tray smell so I don't mind it.

I'll have to try a mix and hope they don't keep rebelling!

My bastard cat kicks the pellets around the landing and down the stairs like footballs!! Hmm

TonicAndTonic · 04/08/2017 16:40

Because they're little furry bastards - I thought Worlds' Best clumping litter was perfect, my cat thought it was completely unacceptable. He peed behind the TV instead. I'm back to Catsan Angry

winglesspegasus · 04/08/2017 16:58

they hate all fancy litters will only use plain old clay litter

dementedpixie · 04/08/2017 17:04

I use a mix of clumping litters. I tried quite a few before settling on my current one. Each time I mixed new litter in with the old so didn't just do a full changeover right away. Currently using super benek corn litter mixed with tigerino Canada litter which is very find and sand like.

I'm going back to worlds best although my favourite was a Canadian one that smelt of lemon grass I just couldn't bear seeing the yellow pee!

InvisibleCities · 05/08/2017 02:15

My cat practically crossed her legs for hours when I bought wood pellets for her. She was doing frantic "post-pooping" scratching on all the furniture, except she wasn't post-poop. I had to dash out to the supermarket and buy her the clay stuff and she jumped in the second I started pouring!

Allofaflumble · 05/08/2017 08:16

I bought a bag of the World's Best and my cat just wouldn't go in the tray. Later on we found he'd been walking upstairs and quietly weeing on the laundry pile.

That bag cost me £40 and it ended up on Freecycle going to Cats protection which was good, but a costly mistake on my part.

Use the white silicon now with no problems. It must have been the smell.

InvisibleCities · 05/08/2017 13:28

With any rejected cat litter (or food, toys), if you go to your nearest vet there should be collection bins for local cat charities (and also dog ones).

dementedpixie · 05/08/2017 13:41

My local Tesco has a collection bin for the rspca. Morrisons has a dogs trust one but I don't have a dog so don't donate to that one
