Best carrier for large cat?

TizzyDongue · 03/08/2017 15:12

He's just standard moggie but he's long legged (I might try measuring him when he's home). Weight 5.5kg.

Now I'm aware a lot of cats aren't fond of being put in a carrier - but on top of that I think he is simple too small for my current one (Anione I think is the make). Which probably makes it worse (he wouldn't get in to go home last time we were in the vets - which was odd!!

Anyone suggestions for a carrier that might be more roomy (and hopefully easier to load a reluctant cat into!)

I have this one for my 7kg cat. It's top loading so really easy to get him in to and gives him plenty of room inside. It can get a heavy to carry at times though

Sorry forgot to say it's called a Cabrio Cat Carrier. Was around £25 but worth it compared to the stress of chasing my cat around the house Grin

TizzyDongue · 03/08/2017 15:19

That's the Catsomethng one isn't it. I was just in the Worlds Most Unhelpful Pet Store trying to look at it on the uppermost shelf. Sadly after several hours (could have been less) of being ignored by the staff I had to give up!

Was expensive though 55 euro Shock.

I've recently bought this one. It has proper nuts and bolts to hold it together, which is what attracted me to it, and it wasn't that expensive either.

I wanted one that was top-opening but all the ones I could find (and afford) had the handle on the part that opened, and I was worried the top part would break as I was holding it and the box fall down. None of them were as good as the one above, though, by far.

The last one I bought, a Good Girl one, I think, is held together by push in clips (ie the top part clips immediately to the bottom half, no extra bolts) and I just don't trust it at all. I fear the one I most recently bought may prove tricky once actually at the vet (as there's no quick way of separating the two halves but I'd rather have that and know it is actually going to hold together.

TizzyDongue · 03/08/2017 18:19

That sounds good Dude - unfortunately the Amazon link is telling me it doesn't ship to Ireland and I can't find it anywhere else here!!

I'm looking at this one now:

m.zooplus.ie/shop/dogs/dog_cages_carriers/crates/small_dog_crates/129675?stars=4

I like the one Iknowacrackingowlsanctuary posted about (and I've only just spotted you second post about it's name and price!! Bit of a mark up £25 to €55. Irritating!). I was actually really considering it when my GingerGiant was a kitten (and teeny) but the weight of it (and the price a bit) put me off

It's about £30 inc postage on Ebay

The one you're looking at looks good also.

PestoSwimissimos · 03/08/2017 18:35

TizzyDongue · 03/08/2017 18:46

Now checking out this one:

m.zooplus.ie/shop/cats/cat_carriers_travel/cat_carriers_kennels/413426

The price of which seems to be (quite shockingly) cheaper in euro!!

Just need to find more reviews

That Catit one looks really good, Pesto. Could do with it for my cat (she's a nightmare to get in, haven't tried her with the new one, though she has walked in before. Maybe if we don't think about the V-E-T and just put loads of treats in it might just work...?)

In case you're wondering, I also have 5 rabbits so I was keen to get a large one, which is why I went for the one I did.

DumbledoresApprentice · 03/08/2017 18:57

I also have the orange and white Cabrio that was posted above. It's great. I bought it because I was adopting a Maine Coon. When I went to collect her she was a lot smaller than I was expecting, having only seen whopping great males before. She has loads of space in there and it would fit a whopping big cat no problem. It is heavy with the cat inside but I use the shoulder strap. The gully round the edge proved its worth immediately as she weed in it on the way home from the shelter. It prevented wee leaking into the car but also kept it away from the cat so she wasn't sitting in it.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/08/2017 19:09

I've got the Cabrio in purple (DH wouldn't let me get a pink one for Harry!) and it's been brilliant. I'd definitely recommend it, but we do put a catch on the door in case it comes open. There's no reason to think it will, I'm just paranoid!

PestoSwimissimos · 03/08/2017 19:10

I had to get ours coz when I went to collect our 2nd rescue cat, he was too big for my previous cat carrier. The shelter had to lend me a vet cage Blush to get him home Grin

Iknowacrackingowlsanctuary · 03/08/2017 19:13

They do the Caribo in purple PinkSparkly? Shock I would have loved that! Not sure about DH or my 7kg ginger fluffball either though Grin

Wordsaremything · 03/08/2017 19:16

Best ever carrier is a curver one ( can't link) its plastic basket weave effect but ignore that- the lid is hinged, for easy access, it locks easily- those wire door ones are a nightmare - there is a little flap to put your hand in for comfort and it has a large lockable carry handle- looks a bit like those baby carry things people have. It's ace, easy to get them in and out of , large - all my cats settle in it really quickly. Do google.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/08/2017 19:17

They used to but I'm not sure if they do it any more as we've had it a long time.

Here's Harry modelling his Cabrio.

Mine have one which looks like a gym bag from
The range, think it's actually a dog carrier. It's still up from its last use because one sleeps in it and one on top! Hmm

TizzyDongue · 03/08/2017 19:27

Ah Wordsaremything I had actually come across that and liked the look of it - but the whole supply to Ireland is a problem.

I'm going to have to move to the uk aren't I! Well except I need a carrier he'll used first ...

TizzyDongue · 03/08/2017 19:28

Oh look at Harry! What a beautiful cat

OP posts:
DumbledoresApprentice · 03/08/2017 20:03

Gives you a bit of a sense of how huge it is. The door lifts off really easily and without the door it's her bed at home.

WhaT size is she?

Wordsaremything · 03/08/2017 21:09

Amazon won't supply to Ireland? Didn't know that

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/08/2017 21:10

She's gorgeous Dumbledore, she models so well! Harry just looks deranged!

Wordsaremything · 03/08/2017 21:13

Am wondering if I could order one and send it on but the packaging was excessive - enough for a miniature pony and her family ! I have a friend who bought one on my recommend whose cat has now died - I could see if she still has it?

Wordsaremything · 03/08/2017 21:15

BeAutiful cat dumbledore

TizzyDongue · 03/08/2017 21:18

Just measured him he's (roughly as he wouldn't stay still) 65cm long neck to rump, and 35 cm to his shoulder.

So the carrier is defiently too small!!
