Help please with a cat I'm looking after..

From time to time I look after dogs/cats for people as a very little business. Since last Saturday I've been looking after a lovely white cat who lives locally to me. I'll be looking after her for two weeks and this is in her own home.

The family - who've gone abroad on holiday - only moved to the area three weeks ago. They live in a cul de sac approximately three mins walk from my house. I live in a very busy main road and their house is right behind mine, removed a little

The instructions are to let the cat out twice a day. She's already been going out and about for over a week which I was surprised about as understood that cats need around 6 weeks to get their bearings in a new area. But those are my instructions So I've been popping round and feeding/petting/changing litter etc and letting her out then letting her back in hours later which is what they want

Today I glance out my own kitchen window onto the busy main road and see the bloody cat on the path opposite! Clearly very scared and looking frantic. I froze and watched her run straight across the road, a car missing her by inches. I go out immediately and walk round calling her until I find her near her own house. Let her in, fed and petted and that's that. She's in!

So my question... my instincts are to keep her inside now until they return from their holiday on the 12th August. Obviously going round several times a day! I honestly nearly had a heart attack when I saw her dash across the main road! I really really do not want what would be a fatal accident on my watch thank you very much.

So what would you do? Don't really want to contact the owners on their holiday unless I have to - on the note left for me she put ' contact me via email in case of emergency and I'll try and check emails if I can ' and not sure this is an emergency!

Honestly, if it was me, I'd rather you kept my cat in, and explained why. I'd hope you would use your own judgement and I would respect your decisions. Be prepared to change a lot of litter though!

Yep. That's my inclination. They said they were letting her out as she was unhappy being in and protesting

I'd rather she protested than got squashed in the road

Keep her in! Explain what happened when they get back and hopefully they will rethink what they are doing and either keep her as an indoor cat or cat proof their garden.

PosiePootlePerkins · 02/08/2017 19:45

I agree, keep her in. Better a pissed off alive cat than have something awful happen to her.

Hunkle · 02/08/2017 19:48

Keep her in, definately.

Glad you saw her.

dementedpixie · 02/08/2017 19:50

My kittens go in and out when I am here but when we went away and we had a cat sitter we decided it was better to keep them inside. They survived the 2 weeks and were glad when we got back and they could go back outside again

MrsZB · 02/08/2017 19:51

Def keep her in!

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/08/2017 19:53

I'd keep her in too.

Wtf are the owners thinking

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 02/08/2017 19:57

Keep her in.
We moved 7 weeks ago and have only just started letting Lucy in the garden with us supervising.

Yogagirl123 · 02/08/2017 19:58

That must have been a terrible shock! Yes I agree keep her in, I wouldn't contact the owners, but discuss on their return. Its upto them what they decide then, but I am pretty sure they wouldn't want DC near a busy road.

sorryho0p · 02/08/2017 20:05

Oh it was a shock alright! I was like 'err is that the cat we are looking after?! Looks like her!' And then I shrieked as she just shot over the road, a car inches from her

Owners said they let her out as she was insufferable and wee-ing on the bed as a protest so I'll have to keep her confined in their kitchen. Yes she'll be pissed off but it won't have an effect on me as I only pop round a few times a day. Her being squashed will have an effect on me however

Absolutely keep her in. If the owners complain. Tell they what happened.

Want2beme · 02/08/2017 20:31

Keep her in. If they have a problem with that decision, tel them you thought it was the best thing to do. She should be kept in for a minimum of 3 weeks anyway.

toldmywrath · 02/08/2017 20:35

Absolutely keep her in, pissed off cat much better than squished cat. I'd be pleased that you made the right decision if it was my cat you were looking after.

I wouldn't bother the owner whilst she is on holiday.

You must've got a shock!
