What can I get my cat for outside?

My adorable CoCo loves to go outside, he always has done. However sometimes he isn't bald by the time we were ready to go to bed. When he lived at my mums, the garden backed onto another garden, and she could easily leave a small window open, wide enough for him to get through, but not a person.
He now lives with us (250 miles away, and he coped really well with the move). We have a back yard that backs onto an alleyway (think coronation street, but with gates?) with locked gates at each end, and the only people who have keys are the residents of all houses who's years back onto the alleyway, so it's fairly safe. However we can't have a cat flap, as we have a (absolutely awful) metal gate at our back door (we didn't put it there, it was already here, and we have asked the landlord to remove it and put a new back door on, even said we'd pay, but it hasn't happened). The only other option would be leaving a window open for him to get back in if he's not back, which we don't really want to do.
Obviously we much prefer him to be in before we go to bed, but sometimes he just isn't around, so please no comments about getting him back in earlier. And not letting him out at all will not work, (when we first moved we didn't let him out for few months until he got used to it, and he was scratching all the furniture, weeing all over the carpets in frustration as he wanted to go outside. And yes he did have a clean litter tray and a scratchy post).
So I was wondering about something outside, that he could go in to sleep, if he isn't around when we go to bed. We spoke to the people in the pet shop and explained our situation, and they said that would be our best bet.
Does anyone else have any experience of this, or know of what would be best to get, and where from?
Thank You.

A few nights of being locked out will make sure he gets in on time!!
When we moved our 2 took a few days to grasp the new routine but are in very night now- for over 2 years without fail!!

Mrs he doesn't. He has been shut outside several times when he wasn't around. He just goes goodness knows where, but he wasn't bothered. I on the other hand was very bothered.

You can put a cat flap in a window. You will just need to replace the pane/ double glazed panel before you leave. If it's a double glazed panel then a new panel will need to be made for the flap. Keep the old panel and put it back when you go.

My mum had a small kennel-type thing built for her adopted stray cat.
Would something like that work? It isn't secure but provides shelter (for about half as dozen strays now) if he's still out in the rain/cold/at night.

Our DCat has one of these in the shed. Never bloody uses it but that's another story...

I've got the cat flap in a window - even if it's single glazed they have to make a whole new pane of glass because apparently you can't cut the glass after it's been laminated/toughened.
