that's it really. i love frogs. i love my cat. i know it goes with the territory but it still hurts. i am not aware that she has done this before as never found any evidence of it in the garden (she only goes in the back garden). i was going to bury the frog but i could see it was still breathing and i don't have it in me to finish it off so i threw it next door where it came from (a pond right by our fence) and am hoping it may have just been stunned...... Sad

That can't have been nice. Quite a few years ago I lived in an area with a lot of wildlife and a large cat population. The local vet would euthanase any small creatures that couldn't be saved by popping a cotton ball soaked in something (chloroform perhaps?) into their box.

guiltybystander · 27/07/2017 18:54

R.I.P. froggy Sad

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 27/07/2017 18:55

Cats are natural predators and love to hunt and capture small creatures, often presenting them to their owners as "gifts". It's just the natural order of things.
Try not to get too upset.

Ummmmgogo · 27/07/2017 18:58

it's less cruel to finish it off than to chuck it over a fence imo. cats are predators they kill for fun so try to get used to it because it is natural.

ImBreakingBad · 27/07/2017 18:58

I received a decapitated sparrow earlier today. Last week was a pigeon wing and a barrage of slugs.

Being preggers, they're fond of attempting to pee on me too.

Do count yourself lucky(ier) Grin

ConfusedDotty · 27/07/2017 19:01

My cat brought me a very dead and very rare woodpecker. It's the only time I have ever seen a woodpecker unfortunately. Also I have had many gifts of deceased shrews. It's what cats do, wouldn't ever be without my cat though.

Try not to worry.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 27/07/2017 19:03

I wouldn't make a habit of hurling dying frogs over the neighbour's fence, they might not appreciate it. Grin

ohhereweareagain · 27/07/2017 22:49

Fwiw I feel terrible for throwing it over the fence but I couldn't kill it. I wanted it out of the garden away from the cat. Also garden where I threw it/the direction is literally a pond surrounded by major plant life. No concrete. I was Hoping it was more in shock than hurt and may be ok. Definitely stood no chance in our garden. Our previous cat brought in a bird that I thought had been hurt. Turned out it was just stunned and flew away as the box I put it in wad empty a short while later. The frog had all it's limbs. I couldn't see any blood or obvious puncture marks. I had to take cat to vets today as ongoing treatment 're pills for an infection. Still upset about the whole thing as I've never known her to hurt anything other than flies which I can handle..

Fwiw a male cat of mine that murders mice & shrews has also brought in a young pigeon, a tiny duckling & a bat, all apparently unharmed.

So they can do that if they want to! Hope your froggy was the same Smile

Maryann1975 · 27/07/2017 22:58

My cat has stopped bringing stuff back, but I'm sure she is still catching and just eating it en route home, save carrying it back. It comes naturally to them and short of keeping the cat in, I don't think you can stop them. I've been told of the cat has punctured an animal, it will likely die due to the bacteria from the cats mouth being introduced to the animals blood stream. In small animals, I imagine the shock of being caught and played with, even if cat leaves them alive, the shock will kill them anyway.
It is hard when the cats are hunters, but I've just had to toughen up against it, is be upset too often if I hadn't done.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 27/07/2017 23:01

I was teasing about throwing frogs over the fence. Throwing it into a pond sounds sensible!

Don't be cross with your cat. It's her natural instinct to catch animals. In fact, if she's been poorly with an infection, it's probably a sign that she's feeling better if she's out chasing frogs.

ohhereweareagain · 27/07/2017 23:03

Np really dont laugh re throwing frog. It's awful but I couldn't bury it alive and I couldn't stamp on it or take it a few miles to the vet. Or perhaps I should Have? The ndns garden at the end is a neglected jungle hence dozens of frogs. I try and focus it landing in the surrounding soft bushes of which there are LOADS as I water his garden for him when he goes away. Frog definitely better off in there. I had to throw as I dont have regular access and ivy divider too high to climb over...i dread her going out now. Made her come in when it rained as loads more frogs when it does. Put it this way, I'm a gardener who rescues snails. I go in to the garden waste bags and lift out the trapped ones and give them their favourite leaves ie dailiers then put the watering can over them hence my upset at frog incident. I ain't tough when it comes to this shite .

I'm not cross with her. I love her to bits. She's my darling. Thanks for responding to my neurosis

My cats bring in all sorts of wildlife - we're about 60 - 40%, saving - too late. Ones that bother me most are the baby rabbits and the moles - I love moles! The birds do it best, very good at pretending to be dead until the cat lets go, then fly away.

Oldraver · 28/07/2017 13:00

I dont know how true this is...but OH reckons fogs 'play dead'. So it may not of been a gonna if it ad all its limbs and no signs of puncture wounds.

Ernie had a frog last week and I thought he had eaten its leg, only it was slightly bent the wrong way. I teased it back and put it out of sight of the cat and he was banished inside. I'm sure it was the same froggy that gave me a fright jumping out when I was watering the plants the next day in the same spot

StillMedusa · 28/07/2017 13:41

I rescued a 'playing dead' frog that week. It was a big one and Ophie had a mouthful. When I got it off her it had a tiny wound on its face and its leg was hanging limply...I thought it would die, but popped it onto a lily pad in our pond and it jumped into the water a d swam off! Saw it a few days later... face healing and definitely no broken leg!!
They DO play dead:)
The black bird I disposed of this morning, however wasn't quite so fortunate :/

ohhereweareagain · 28/07/2017 18:37

Thanks old raver Smile

I got home a few years ago to find that my DCat had, like yours, found a frog. I walked up the garden and the cat led me to her present, stretched out on the lawn. I took one look, yelped and fled. I have a thing about frogs so DM had to dispose of it! I'm just thankful that butterflies are DCat's thing so I can deal with them!

ohhereweareagain · 28/07/2017 19:39

Thanks stillmedusa .I feel a little better although poor thing didn't need me flipping it over the fence but I had to as too high to lean over and I knew it had a better chance over there. I pray it settled on either the pond or on soft foliage. I kind of rescued it as i lifted the cat off. I couldn't bear for her to bring a mouse in as I love those too..my previous cat did once. Broke it's back legs. It was running around pulling with its from two hands 😔😔😔😔😔 . Dh had to kill it with a spade. I was sobbing. Always been a cat lover dog disliked but this is the down side

I have found three deceased maimed frogs and four living, besides having been maimed of their front legs either one or both. The wounds of these ones have healed and they are managing somehow. I assume they stay out of the pond though.
It is spawning season now and one of the maimed frogs with one front leg missing is sitting close to the pond while the rest are in the water.
I hadn’t suspected the neighbour’s cat until I read this post and thought maybe the hedgehog but he would have scoffed the lot.
The said cat is old and I guess the frogs are an easier target these days. I shall have to deter her by making entry more trying.
