Switching kittens from cheapo wet pouches to better quality, how long do the runs last?

Hi, kitten novice here.

Kittens were weaned onto whiskas jelly kitten wet food, ate these fine. They LOVE felix pouches, those are wolfed down.

However, I now realise these are not the healthiest, so bought some different, better quality pouches. Was not expecting the kittens to have the runs (loose smelly stools, nothing concerning just unpleasant to clean up). One kitten flatly refused to eat the better pouches unless mixed with felix...

Do their wee tummies adjust, if so over what time period?

Or do I just have to accept my kittens sticking up two fingers at my attempts to enforce heathy eating?

They have good quality dry food available at all times. One eats this happily, the other fussy bugger now eats this if the only option is a high meat content pouch!

I really don't mind what they eat as long as they are healthy and happy but is it worth persisting with the poo-provoking pouches for my purry furries?

Omg they are beautiful!

I'm having the exact same thing and I'm just about to give up. Ive tried every grain free posh brand under the sun ages not stupid she just takes the felix out. I have thrive kitten which is very kind to her belly but the only time she will eat it is if I go out and there's nothing else down. It's very expensive though and I wouldn't want her on it twice a day. The supermarkets are really missing a trick. Did you try hilife tempt me? Mid range and better than Felix I find it hard to get hold off tescos Ocado sometimes have it.

It drives me mad tbh and like you I think if she has expensive biscuits what's half a sachet of Felix twice a day? Do not bother with applepaws dry it has something in it which really gives them the runs. Mine lives Sciemce Plan dry I don't know how good it is and Lily's. Good luck"!

CUTIE

Mine refused to eat expensive grain free high meat content (that he was weened on!) but loves felix and whiskers...

EachandEveryone · 26/07/2017 12:17

I bet the posh stuff tastes bland to them even my big girl would rather eat sheba so I've stopped fighting and give her dear dry stuff

Leaningtoweroflisa · 26/07/2017 13:24

Aw thanks, I luffs them very much. They are both very sweet natured boys as well as being very cute. They are both very fond of cuddling, which I hope they don't grow out of!

Thanks I feel reassured, I'll try the Hi life one each, they have it at pets at home. The stench just now was pretty bad, plus they love scratching / kicking but do not love me trying to scrub off any stray poo. Bleurgh. Otherwise, felix plus good kibble! They're on iams now, which seems good enough, but also bought a variety of good dry stuff (to be supplemented with flies, spiders, moths, and any human food they manage to get - for some reason they both like dry cornflakes)...

I'd just stick to what suits them. Millions of cats are healthy and happy on Whiskaas.

RubbishMantra · 26/07/2017 13:30

Your new kittens are beautiful, such lovely colouring. Are they BSHs?

Regarding squitty belly, it should clear up within 2 weeks. A pro-biotic paste could help. Sometimes the excitement/upheaval of going into a new home can disrupt their tummies.

Zooplus has loads of grain free foods, and Little M got on well with Applaws dry as a kitten, he now eats the adult version along with my other cat.

dementedpixie · 26/07/2017 13:40

You're supposed to gradually mix the 2 foods in greater and greater proportions of the new food to minimise the dodgy tummy. Mine used to eat wainwrights wet, bozita, feringa, and other high meat foods but have now decided they don't like pate style foods or food with too much jelly. The have high meat dry food, AVA kitten food from pets at home, but have Sheba fine flakes and gourmet perle adult wet foods as that's the ones they will eat. They are nearly nine months old now

Leaningtoweroflisa · 26/07/2017 13:55

Yes rubbish BSHs. It's surprisingly hard to adopt kittens / cats locally so looked at some ads, fell in love and went against my 'we'll just get moggies' statement... the little cream is getting gingerier every day no idea what he'll look like when he's grown! They've been with us nearly 2 months (gosh where does time go?) now, growing so fast!

demented I offered them unmixed first time and learned my lesson as they both walked off unimpressed. Siggy (silver one) is such a peaceful, amenable chap and did eat some - with predictable results! Starchild just flat refused. I mix the posh stuff with felix and they eat it without picking out just the felix. I think they're not fussed on the pate texture either.

Will look for the pro biotic paste as well, thanks.

My vet tells me it's all a con really. I have so many tins of royal Carny, Von Feinstein and other German stuff I can't spell it drives me nuts. Then the sachets of Hunters, Royal Camin she's just barely interested so I'm carrying on with Felix and will try to
Put a couple of tablespoons of the good stuff in. She eats a lot more dry anyway and uses the drinking fountain a lot. Have you got one?

Leaningtoweroflisa · 26/07/2017 14:40

Hi each no, no drinking fountain yet, they're pretty good at drinking from their bowl - e.g. When starry went on a nope, not eating that muck and just ate dry food protest, the level in the water bowl went down a lot more than when they're eating a mixture. They're also good at knocking the dry food into it so might get them one when they're bigger (and less dainty!)

Theyll find a way....

Leaningtoweroflisa · 28/07/2017 07:37

Awww so cute and clever kitty!

Hahahahahaha I accidentally bought the crap felix and realised nope, not good for my feline overlords! Must be the as good as it looks, slave! I opened and dished up a pouch each before I realised, and it was mostly left this morning. So now they are having crap felix with expensive wainwright stuff mixed in.

I think they are eating the wainwright stuff and the jelly from the felix...

It has dawned on me that the mixed in good pouches might be why starry has put on a good growth spurt and now looks bigger and muscly-ier rather than a lot more kitten like than his brother...

OP posts:
Leaningtoweroflisa · 28/07/2017 07:38

Nope, that's not what I meant, got distracted by a flying leap onto my leg, ow!

How brother has always been bigger by about a third, starry seems to be catching up the last week or so!

EachandEveryone · 28/07/2017 10:50

Maybe. I don't know if we've tried wainwrights why do they go for the sauce all the time I wonder
