Waiting for vets to open to have my cat put down

He's 17 and had heart issues for a few months now. But yesterday made it clear that the end is here now, and so I'm going to have to have him put down. He's gone very downhill, not eaten or drank, his legs are going etc etc.

He's my best friend. He's the dc's best friend. And they're away, which is probably a good thing?
It's awful, isn't it?

It is awful for you but a blessing for your cat-it's the ultimate act of love for him

Okite · 24/07/2017 07:44

So sorry to hear this, but you are doing the right (and difficult) thing.
It is absolutely awful, you're right.

TheSpottedZebra · 24/07/2017 07:47

Oh, you're very kind to reply. No idea why I posted, really!

I know it's the right thing to do, but it's still shit.
I can't even ring up for another hour or so so I'm just sitting on the floor with him on cushions. He's doing that purring that's reassuring not happy purr.

I'm so sorry, heartbreaking though it is ,you are doing the right thing for him. Will be thinking of you both this morning

Gatekeeper · 24/07/2017 07:51

You were right to post , all of us in here have been through this or will be going through this. All of us MNetters and our cat friends are standing alongside you in our thoughts

MrsMozart · 24/07/2017 07:53

I'm so sorry. Even when it's the right thing to do it still bloody hurts. A hand hold from me xx

TheSpottedZebra · 24/07/2017 07:54

Oh, thank you. I've had pets all my life, but this is the first time I will have had to take a cat to say goodbye. I know it is the right thing to do, and I know it will be peaceful but it's a quiet kind of hell.

I am so sorry for you . I had my lovely furry friend put to sleep a few months, ago. His back legs went and thought to have had a blood clot. He,was nearly 16 .
The last loving act you can do is to hold and cuddle him when the vet injects him. He will pass very quickly and know he,was loved.

Frouby · 24/07/2017 07:56

Awww love it's bloody horrible. I had dpony pts a couple of months ago. It's heartbreaking.

But now a bit of time has passed I feel better. Still sad but I know it was the right thing to do for her. Hugs to you xx

TheSpottedZebra · 24/07/2017 07:58

jaffa a blood clot is a possibility for my cat too, given his history.

Sorry for everyone here's losses.

I had my cat pts, she was 17 and really poorly to the extent I couldn't in all conscious let keep going, even after £300 vets bill. I was absolutely gutted and my best friend drove us to the vets and held my hand , haven't cried so much in years. A year later have adopted 2 boys and we all love each other to bits!

Hand hold OP, I know how awful you must be feeling, totally heartbreaking to lose a loyal pet, we had to have our 18 year old cat PTS recently, we really miss him. DS1, crying his eyes out, he was in the middle of taking his GCSE's, never a good time though for something like this to happen. But you know when the time is right, you have made the best decision for him. Take it easy over the next few days, look after yourself.

chocolatespiders · 24/07/2017 08:05

I am so sorry. It's heartbreaking but the right thing to do. Was very peaceful when I took my cat. Although I miss her everyday I don't regret my decision.
Best wishes

Alittlepotofrosie · 24/07/2017 08:18

Im really sorry op Sad Any chance your vet will do a home visit so your cat can be let go In familiar surroundings?

13Bastards · 24/07/2017 08:23

I dread the day this happens to me. You are doing the kindest thing for your mog. Huge hugs from me x

TheSpottedZebra · 24/07/2017 08:24

I wondered that, frosie - I'll ask when the surgery opens.
I suspect the issue is will be time but we shall see...

I'm sorry, sending a huge hug Flowers

Want2beme · 24/07/2017 09:37

So sorry to hear this. It is such a difficult time. Even at the end you wonder if there's a chance they'll pull through. There comes a time for all of our little friends and we have to be so strong for them. My 20 year old man was PTS a week ago. Thinking of youFlowers

Lancelottie · 24/07/2017 09:46

Sorry to heard that, SpottedZebra. They will probably find time to come out if you ask. Our cat went very gently on a rug in her own kitchen - barely glanced up as the vet stroked her and injected her.

The vet said it was 'the job they didn't want to do but a privilege as well' (and then sent us a card from the surgery to say they'd all miss her! Think we might have been there rather too often over the years).

Loopsdefruits · 24/07/2017 10:32

The situation is awful, I am so sorry OP :( the procedure itself is very kind and gentle, and is often the kindest and best choice for a very poorly elderly pet. Often treatment can be a lot less kind after a certain stage. RIP your sweet cat, and I hope you and your family cope well afterwards. Hugs for you and your DCs x

FizzyBanger · 24/07/2017 11:08

So sorry Zebra. It's so hard, even when it's the right thing to do. Thinking of you Flowers x

Threetoedsloth · 24/07/2017 16:36

Ah Zebra, my heart goes out to you. It's the hardest task we face , but we do it for them, because we love them so. Thinking of you and your dear sweet girl.

Threetoedsloth · 24/07/2017 16:36

Sweet boy- sorry.

DramaAlpaca · 24/07/2017 16:38

I'm sorry OP. I was in your shoes in February and it's so hard. You are doing the last, kindest thing you can do for your much loved old boy Flowers
