Flea Treatment

What flea treatments to people use? I've used Advocate on Harry for years but I'm reluctant to use it again as it appears to have removed the top layer of leather from my sofa (not 100% sure it was that but it seems to be quite common looking online). We're hoping the sofa insurance will cover it but I don't want to risk it happening again.

We can't pill him because of his jaw so I was wondering about the injection but I'm not sure how it works.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know the injection makes any biting female flea infertile, so it stops the life cycle. I believe it is effective for 6 months, I would use it as a backup rather than a main treatment. We use advocate, it still seems effective. Shame about your sofa though, could you put it on last thing at night and keep him in the kitchen so it dries off overnight?

I use Stronghold spot on.

Userwithoutaname · 24/07/2017 03:18

I use Stronghold because it kills eat mites too.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/07/2017 06:59

Thanks all, I'll look into Stronghold but I'm not sure if my vet uses it. Shutting him in the kitchen isn't a option as it's tiny and he wouldn't have anywhere to sleep.

I use Advocate. Front line doesn't work. Can you put a throw or old towel on the sofa after the flea treatment? I have throws on the seats of my sofas for the cats. Never had a problem with the leather after flea treatment and I have 3 cats.

Weedsnseeds1 · 24/07/2017 07:44

Bravecto, which lasts three months and does ticks as well.
I have a fabric sofa though, so not sure if it causes the same problem.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/07/2017 07:55

The injection stops your house getting infested but they don't die after biting puss.

I'd go for a throw too.

If the leather was coated it's not that strong, some human tablets invalidate leather insurance. I'm sure you can buy kits online for car leather repairs.

The damage is too bad to do anything ourselves so we're hoping the insurance will cover it. If not we're going to have to claim on our home insurance.

The insurance company said that sofa manfacturers have had to change something they use on leather to a water based product and this is less hard wearing than the old product. We haven't had a problem in 9 years of giving him flea treatment so I'm a bit worried about using something from the same batch on him!

I'll find some old sheets to put over the sofa next time we treat him for anything. It's a 5 seater corner unit and he likes snuggling into it or laying on the back so I think we'd be better off covering the whole lot!

Oh and to add insult to injury we've only had the sofa since November!

Our vet has recommended Broadline a few months ago (We used to use Advocate which worked). It has been completely useless and my cats now have the worst flea infestation I've seen in 30 plus years of cat ownership. Back to the vet today for a refund and replacement with something that works...

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/07/2017 12:33

I've just spoken to the vet and they recommended Bravecto. I like the idea as it covers ticks as well as fleas and lasts for 3 months so he won't have to have it as often but I am worried as when I googled it the first thing I saw was a post about getting it removed from the market because of side effects. Does anyone here use it?

Good luck Grumpy!

weeds uses bravecto and I'm using it from next week.

grumpy broadline uses the same flea stuff as frontline iirc, so is useless.
