George finally been prescribed antibiotics for a suspected middle ear infection. I've tried:

  • crushed in chicken
  • crushed in cream
  • crushed in custard
  • crushed in corned beef
  • crushed in cooked warm salmon (worked, but only once, refused 2nd time).
  • sat him on lap, held mouth open, put at back of throat, stroked throat blah de blah de blah,..... about 30 times, each time pill located on sofa/floor, cushion, my trousers etc etc

(He's lost 500g since his ear problems started so can afford the calories!).

Any other ideas? Pill Poppers or Pill pockets?

We use pate, string cheddar, raw mince, cooked chicken and primula on a strict rotation. Increases the shopping bill a bit but better than wrestling with a stressy cat.

With ours it's making sure she's hungry and then offering a treat (currently cheese, but seems to vary) with pill broken up and mixed in. If she's not hungry then not a hope in hell of any method working.

Mince is a good idea, might try that. Corned beef is working well at the moment, I'm sure we have reached a level of understanding. He sits and watches me mash the pill into it, think he's weighed it up and thought 'Sod it I want the meat so I'll have the pill'. Grin

This ear problems has been going on for 3 weeks. In that time I've been to the vet 4 times, and had 2 ear cleaning products and he's been in to have an ear clean. None of it has made a difference (ear cleaning made it much worse). Then they at last stop bleating on about antibiotic resistance and how they want to avoid it (!), give me antibiotic tablets, and I can already see a difference in George's behaviour and mood. They should have given me them 3 weeks ago!

When my cat got attacked almost killed by the dog next door the vet gave him a long lasting antibiotic injection. It was a bit more expensive but totally worth not putting him through more trauma to have oral tablets after what he's gone through; is that an option for your cat?

I had to give my cat daily tablets when he came back from the vets, and honestly he was brilliant. I didn't even have to hold him, just open his mouth by pressing both sides and drop the tablets in there. He is incredibly laid back though, sometimes I think he's not a real cat lol.
The dog is another thing entirely. He's a pug so I can't hold his mouth shut, and when you think it's gone, it falls out of the sides of his mouth Grin
