We've rescued a 6 years old boy last month. He's quite happy, an indoors cat, but has a tendency to wake up and play at 3 am on the wooden floors. And when he's done with that the scratches the litter tray liner to shreds. And takes his time, too. So, not much sleep and I'm not sure what to do. What can I use as litter liner instead of plastic bag/liner? I tried paper too, just as maddening.
Do I need to cut his claws a bit?
Thank you!

Do you really need a liner?

Use a deep box and LOTS of litter, something more like a storage box than a litter tray.

Before you cut claws get the vet to show you how and get the correct clippers.

If you cut his claws he will probably want to scratch more. Cats scratch to sharpen claws (although they are probably programmed to scratch regardless rather than to look at their claws and decide they need sharpening:) ). Either way, cutting the claws won't help.

I agree, use a deep litter tray and forget about liners.

What sort of scratchers does he have? You need a very tall sisal one and a few of the corrugated cardboard box type ones. I can find links if you like.

I wouldn't use a litter tray liner. You can buy scratching boards which you could leave around as maybe he just wants to scratch.
Yes get the vet or nurse to show you how to cut claws or better still, get them to do it.

I don't use a liner either. Does he have a scratching post. Although mine like to scrabble at the bottom step of my carpeted stairs despite having one!

Litter liners are sold to make our lives easier, but most cats don't like them that much. Once they've been shredded they make the tray harder to clean, so I haven't used them in years. Above suggestions about a deeper box and litter are also good ideas.

Take the liner out. I used to use a puppy pad but it would smell long before the litter did. You don't actually need a liner.

Thank you very much. Not really sure why we have a liner, the previous cat always accepted one and it made life very easy. This one...not so much.
He has (and uses) several scratching posts/corrugated cardboard. I guess he just has a bee in his bonnet about the litter liner.
I'll put more litter then.
Thank you.
