Please help. Male blockage, I'm scared

Our gorgeous boy was taken to the vets yesterday because he was dripping urine when walking. Vet felt his bladder and said it was nearly at bursting point. He was kept in over night and given medication to try to help him go. That didn't work so they put a needle in to his bladder to empty it. This morning it had filled right back up again. He managed to do a little wee so vet emptied the bladder again and we have brought him home with a load of medication and hopes and prayers that he will wee properly before tomorrow.

Vet says his urine was tested and there were no crystals and no infection. She doesn't seem to know what is causing the blockage. She said it could be inflammation but that the anti inflammatory didn't work or something more serious like a tumour.

We are bringing him back in tomorrow morning, if he hasn't wee'd then a catheter under anaesthetic will be placed.

I asked what would happen if the catheter doesn't work. She said that unfortunately sometimes if all attempts to unblock fail then it gets to a point where the toxins will build up in his body and his organs will fail. I'm so scared.

Another worry is Insurance will not pay for this as he's had a uti before we got him and they class FLUTD as a pre existing condition. I don't want this to be about money but I don't have thousands, which is what it could go up to if multiple surgeries are necessary. We're at £250 at the moment and even that will be a stretch. Luckily the vets are partnered with a credit company which I will hopefully qualify for but what happens if I don't?

My head feels like it's going to explode. I've never wanted a cat to pee so badly.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm looking for the good and bad just so I have an idea of what to expect.

Please don't flame me for the money worries. I feel bad enough as it is and I wish money wasn't even a consideration.

Hope he improves and it doesn't come to this but our male cat did become blocked and had to have the operation where a new hole was created!

He then lived a further 12 years with only one subsequent bout of cystitis, so was very effective and worthwhile.

SleepFreeZone · 17/07/2017 11:11

Your poor little cat 😢 Really hoping the blockage has resolved OP and he starts to improve now.

It all happened so quickly. I thought he was getting better and then he just went down hill so fast. I can't stop shaking. My poor boy.

Such a shock for you. It must be so hard for it to have happened so quickly. He isn't suffering anymore, that is the only way to try and come to terms with it. Poor you and poor puss.

So sorry Roarina, we lost one of our boy cats in Sept very suddenly, but the only consolation is that it happens very quickly. Lots of love to you.

missmove38 · 17/07/2017 21:30

I'm so sorry Sad

Roarina · 17/07/2017 21:35

I can't stop thinking about what more we could have done. Maybe if we'd tried the catheter sooner it wouldn't have got so bad. The vet was lovely, she said that we could keep attempting the catheter but the chances of it going in were really low. He was too swollen. The vomiting became frequent and his heart rate was through the roof. She said it was a sign that the urine was backing up in to his kidneys and his organs would start to fail. I had to make the decision so quickly and now I don't know if maybe we should have tried again.

He wasn't happy, I didn't want him to suffer. He had a sedative 15 minutes before so he was relaxed and peaceful when it happened.

My DC are inconsolable. They've never experienced any sort of death before. Poor DD cried so much her nose started bleeding Sad

We have another cat, she's lovely but very solitary. Our boy was the cuddler and the house feels so empty without him.

Thank you all for the kind words and advice over the past few days. Feels like it's been weeks!

Oh no OP :(

I cried and cried when my childhood cat was PTS. It was my first experience of death too and even as a child I felt guilty that I could/should have done more. Cry, let your DC cry and be gentle with each other Flowers
