Why does he make this noise?

We have 2 domestic short haired cats 1 is very shouty and meows loudly purrs loudly the other is very quiet he rarely meows and when he does bless him it's quite pathetic, however sporadically he will come in from his all night rave at 4am and announce himself with what I can only describe as similar noise the cat makes from the 'Stop look and listen' advert with the boy and the cat "Charlie says"

He's not hungry hasn't brought a present just pops through the flap makes these odd noises then comes to bed.

Anyone any ideas what that's all about?

Is he neutered? I'm not sure what sound you mean but when I lived on a farm the feral cats used to make the strangest noises before during and after having their wicked way with the ladies.

LazySusan11 · 15/07/2017 09:19

Yes both neutered, it wasn't stop look and listen it was don't talk to strangers advert in the 70's. I am so old anyway the whole meowy bit 'charley' does sounds a lot like our cat at 4am!

He may have hyperthyroidism. Is he always very busy and eating a lot? My cats have had this and took medication for it. I know the sound you mean, I've seen the ad on YouTube. The vet will you what's up.

sadmum2017 · 15/07/2017 09:22

One of mine does this. He comes in and meows until someone acknowledges him, then he goes to sleep. Luckily we sleep through it most of the time now.

I also know when the little darling has brought a present in because he still meows but it's muffled because his gob is full Grin

NC4now · 15/07/2017 09:29

I know that sound. My little BSH guy does it too - not at 4am thankfully. He does it when he wants to play out, or when he's just come in before he settles down to sleep. I think it's his way of letting me know he's in.

LazySusan11 · 15/07/2017 09:29

No he eats when he's hungry but doesn't eat masses unlike his greedy sister! Vet check was last month for their yearly vaccinations and he says he's healthy.

When he does this which isn't too often he tends to jump up and want a cuddle for 5 mins before going to sleep in his bed.

He's just talking to you, telling you he's home 😀 I've got 3. 2 are very quiet, the other has to tell you everything he's doing. He meows when he wakes up, when he's going to sleep & when he's wandering round the house. If the house is quiet & he wakes up in a room on his own he'll start meowing til someone speaks to him. I think he just wants to know there's someone around. A bit annoying at 5am!
He's only lived with us for a couple of years & he's 15 so it might be his age. No idea if he's always done it.
A couple of days ago he was outside & started meowing really loudly, i could hear him through the house. I looked out & he'd brought a mouse home. He doesn't often hunt at his age & clearly wanted the world to know of his achievement!

I'm baaaaack, where are yooooou? I had a busy evening. I want snuggles NOW. WAKE UP!.

exWifebeginsat40 · 15/07/2017 10:06

our youngest uses miaows as echo location to find me when she comes in. she shouts, i call her, she is happy and heads off to bed.

the ginger and white heffalump trills and sings to me. the oldest is a grumpy old bag, but gives a silent miaow every so often.

and, i used to have a rottie who did the Charley Says noises.

well, i think that's all the 'i had a pet' news from me. back to you in the studio, OP.

NC4now · 15/07/2017 10:06

Yep, that's exactly what Oz does. I think of it like when my teenager shouts up the stairs to tell me he's home!

Papergirl1968 · 15/07/2017 10:13

Just had to watch the ad to see what noise Charley made!
Dcat does similar when coming into a room or if I stroke him when he's asleep - it's kind of a greeting noise, I think.

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/07/2017 12:16

I know exactly the noise you mean. Mine does it every time he enters a room. It's just his way of announcing his grand entrance and making sure all attention is in him.
He also does the "silent meow" where he opens his mouth and just sort of sighs as if he's deflating. He doesn't do much in the way of traditional meowing, but has a very varied vocabulary none the less!

Papergirl1968 · 15/07/2017 12:34

Dcat hasn't mastered the art of purring and miaowing at the same time and sounds like he is being strangled!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/07/2017 13:32

Dcat hasn't mastered the art of purring and miaowing at the same

Is that the cat equivalent of walking and chewing gum?

I used to love hearing a meezer I grew up with running and MAIWWWWWWING at the same time, it sounded like someone was jogging a record shows age

OlennasWimple · 15/07/2017 13:40

One of ours used to make that sort of noise if there was another cat around

LazySusan11 · 15/07/2017 16:54

Weed mine is the same it's a pitiful meow for such a commanding gent! He's unusually cuddly today, I'll take it Grin

He's telling you his news. They're funny little creatures, aren't they?

Little M likes bouncing up and down the stairs too Spartacus, except he has a really unusual voice, so it sounds like someone glugging noisily from a bottle - "Ungungungungung!"

RandomMess · 15/07/2017 20:00

Our boy does this - he's just announcing his arrival. It's extra loud when bringing gifts or has got wet and want towel drying...

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/07/2017 23:19

I also get a lot of "ackackackackack...."
I understand this to mean "you left the house, how dare you, I bed attention,, pick me up, do my squishy bits....."

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/07/2017 23:20

Need attentionSmile

Papergirl1968 · 16/07/2017 19:40

Ha, yes Spartacus - he clearly hasn't learned to multitask!
