Advice needed

Hello, novice cat owner here could do with some advice. My cat is an outdoor cat but I rent and can't put in a cat flap, so she goes in and out a window. Whenever i go out I call her in and close windows so she's stuck in until I'm home. When I leave she sits at the window staring longingly at the outside world.

When she first started going out after a week I left her out while I went to the gym closing the window and we lost her. After spending the rest of the day shouting and rattling food she finally strolls back in around 9pm. Afterwards she was reluctant to go out again in case she was locked out again.

To give abit of background her first owners would lock her out for the entire day and would never let her in. They decided they couldn't be bothered with her lucky for me as she's an absolute charm. My mum took her in first but it was like something out of pet battle royale. She would bully my sisters (evil) chiuahas, scratch them, take their toys ect and would hide behind doors to jump and bite the other cats. So coming to mine where she reigns supreme as only pet is ideal.

Do people think calling her in when I go out is the best thing? I feel terribly guilty when I'm gone for hours and she's stuck in. Or is there anyway to get her used to going out and not being let in without her running away and hiding

If she is unhappy inside could you get a kennel type thing outside? Put a blanket in and some treats. Get her used to going in it so if she is 'stuck' outside she has somewhere to shelter.

I'd continue to keep her in. Have you got lots of toys etc for her? She may be bored, but at least she's safe, and you can let her out when you get home.

If she was unhappy being shut in she'd stop coming in when you call. My cat knows I like to shut her out of my bedroom at night so at bedtime she hides under the bed, right in the middle where I can't reach her. 2am she jumps all over me. Hmm I used to be able to tempt her out by shaking some treats but she's got wise to that now.

I used to leave a TV or radio on, usually the TV and would find my cat sitting in front watching it, he had toys, food, water fountain, and would be at the door to greet me when I got home. He had previously been an outdoor cat but vanished too many times and then it became unsafe to let him out.
As long as they get cuddles and play they can be fine with not going out.

I wouldn't have an outdoor cat now with the UK Cat Killer still out and about but have had a cat run for many years so they can get outside and be safe.

I would also keep her in. However it may still be possible to get a cat flap. If your back door is a uPVC one with a panel at the bottom then it's very easy to get and put in replacement panels. So you could put in a flap and then replace the panel before you leave.

I kept mine in when we lived by busy road.

He didn't like it but he coped.

Thanks for all the replies think I need to invest in some more cat toys she's only interested in my dressing gown tie and my Lo's play mat. I live in a ground floor flat with just a a front door and then communal door which I can't make any adjustments to and no garden space for her but luckily it's opposite a huge park so her favourite past time is hunting, dismembering and bringing home small animals much to our horror.

Same flat layout here but I have a (not secure) garden. If I'm going out for hours say to work, he stays in. If I'm nipping to the supermarket or gym I'm happy to leave him out. Generally if I'm at home I have the window open and he's free to go outside
When I'm at work he just appears to sleep Hmm and I find him in the same place I left him Grin snoring away
