We have given up on trying to convince Harry to take Pronefra for his kidneys. He wasn't eating the meals with it added and was deeply suspicious of anything that didn't have it added. It's been referred to as The Pronefra Protest at the vets!

Tomorrow we try Easypill renal. Harry won't take treats so the plan IT to crumble it in his lunchtime tuna and hope for the best. The vet said if this doesn't work the only other option is a renal diet but that went down worse than the Pronefra! I forgot to ask about Ipakitine, I'll suggest that when if the Easypill doesn't work.

Please keep everything crossed that Harry takes this without any problems - apparently the vets have only had one cat that doesn't like it. Until tomorrow that is. Then it'll probably be two...

He's sharp as a tack that one. Mine will eat pineapple flavoured liquid antibiotics Hmm

Vinorosso74 · 10/07/2017 21:51

Oh Harry. They're buggers aren't they? Luckily Vinocat is pretty good with medication but on the odd occasions I have put anything on food she wouldn't eat it. I have the tablet giving down to a fine art with her (others could have my hand off).
Go on Harry eat your medicine!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2017 04:33

His lunchtime tuna, you d got it made there Harry. For goodness sake stop stressing your slave out anymore and take the medication! 😻😻

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/07/2017 13:29

Well that went well Confused

I cut up the Easypill into tiny pieces and hid it in a nice bowl of tuna and squid. Harry had one sniff and went and sat outside in the rain. He's since come back in, walked gingerly up to the bowl, scraped his paw across the floor as if he's covering it and buggered off!

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/07/2017 13:53

Oh dear, ours does that to food he doesn't like.

He's burying it for later in case rations run low.

jmscp2015 · 11/07/2017 14:13

Have they suggested semintra?

It doesn't stink like pronefra, might be worth a try?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/07/2017 14:22

I think he was more likely burying it in disgust! I couldn't see any of the Easypill and all I could smell was tuna, his sense of smell must be amazing!

That one hasn't been suggested jmscp2015, thank you. The vet apparently had a suspicion it would work out like this and is already thinking of other ideas so I'll suggest that.

Is it wise to be feeding your cat fish if he has kidney problems?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/07/2017 16:07

The vet knows and hasn't told me not to. He's very bloody minded fussy and she would rather he eats something than nothing.

OP posts:
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/07/2017 16:08

I should have said it's very early stage and it would probably be at least two years before we would see any symptoms. We only know as the vet took bloods when he had an x ray.

Sorry to hear about more problems for poor Harry. I ended up giving my cat whatever hey wanted to eat, and not going down the road of renal meds or special food. It may have shortened the cat's life a bit, hard to know, but it was certainly much less stress for me (cat was absolutely dreadful at taking meds and v fussy with food) and the cat seemed happy enough.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/07/2017 16:27

Thanks timtam, your post has made me feel a lot better as I think that will be the route we will end up taking with Harry. He's got no symptoms and I'd rather he had a shorter happy life than a long one with me forcing medicine down him at every opportunity and making both of us miserable.

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2017 17:10

You are quite right. A happy life is all that matters. I think he's already stressed you out enough as it is!

dailydance · 11/07/2017 17:22

I struggled to give mine antibiotics and tried hiding it in tuna... didn't work for me either. What did work was using a cat tablet syringe. It was still a struggle and you have my sympathy.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/07/2017 18:07

Strangely enough he took antibiotics in his food, he's just not taking his kidney meds. We can't pill him either as his jaw is unstable and I'm worried about doing more damage.

I'm on my last nerve thanks to that cat!

jmscp2015 · 11/07/2017 19:52

No problem @PinkSparklyPussyCat

Definitely worth a try.

And you're right it's better for them to eat something than nothing. So frustrating when they just won't take there meds! Fingers crossed for you!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/07/2017 21:49

I spoke to the vet today and she has agreed we can try Ipakitine, although apparently it's not as good as Pronefra. If we can get him to take it it'll be be better than nothing! Apparently semintra is for more serious kidney disease and she wouldn't consider prescribing it at this stage.

Apparently if the Ipakitine doesn't work the only other options are not to treat him and see how things pan out or for him to have an operation to have his jaw fixed so I can syringe the Pronefra directly into his mouth. We won't be doing that.

The vet was quite understanding when I told her we wouldn't treat him, although the nurse I spoke to initially made me feel awful.

OP posts:
Fluffycloudland77 · 12/07/2017 22:13

Well it's your cat, you know him best not the nurse.

Let's hope it works.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/07/2017 20:47

That's what I keep telling myself Fluffy. I look at playing with his toys, attacking DH and chasing imaginary objects and I don't want to make him miserable. If there was a cure it would be different but at the end of the day the outcome will be the same.

@timtam23 did you have your cat monitored by the vet? Ours wants him to have regular blood tests but I'm wondering if it's worth it if we're not treating him.

OP posts:
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/07/2017 09:58

Sorry for shouting but HE'S ONLY BLOODY EATEN TWO MEALS WITH IPAKITINE!

I know it started off well with Pronefra, but not this well - the bowls are clean. Fingers crossed he might be ok with this one!

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 15/07/2017 10:30

Yippee!! Go Harry!

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/07/2017 10:48

Is it the most expensive option? Wink

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/07/2017 13:40

Probably! The vet was against him having it as it's old and there are more effective treatments now but my argument is they are only effective if Harry takes them. It's all very well to tell me to persevere but it's not easy when he's not eating anything!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/07/2017 14:36

Need to see more pictures of the gorgeous boy.
