Scared of kitten going outside!

Hi all I need a shake probably! Little (big) kitten is almost six months and due second vaccine next week. The last couple of weeks I've been letting him out a bit but always grabbing him when he tries to go into another garden. I've also tried to put him off going into the street. But do you think it will be ok for me just to let him go where he likes after next week? I'm worried he'll get stuck in someone's garden or run over or something (not a busy road but a few parked cars). Am I just being stupidly overprotective and should I just let him get on with it or should I keep on going out with him until he's a bit older? Thanks :)

I wouldn't let him out without supervision for a while yet - and only when hungry. And try and get him used to coming back in - e.g. rattling dreamies.

They are so little still I understand how you feel!

6 months is still so young - I think you should stick to supervised, when hungry like Para says

Thankyou guys :) so how long do you think just to let him sort himself out? At the mo he is out for ten mins or so each time, not so long but I do worry about him going into another garden and I can't call him back. I tried the Dreamies but most times he gets very involved in the garden (lots going on, lots of smells etc) its hard to distract him.

I wouldn't let him out at all before the second lot of vaccinations (this is what my vet advised - my kitten has just had his at 13 weeks) and from then gradually, supervised, and hungry, as a kind of pre-dinner routine. The vet's words were - he's an idiot. So keep an eye on him for a few months til he's less of an idiot. Not quite the words I'd use to a patient of mine but I got the idea!

He shouldn't go out at all until he's had the 2nd set of vaccinations.

Has he been neutered? If not, I wouldn't let him out until he has been. Unneuteured males are more likely to wander (making him more likely to get run over) and get into fights.

When he does go out, I'd suggest as the PPs have advised.

Hi, oh thanks, that is useful! He is neutered and chipped so should be ok after second v. next week. Haha he is kind of an idiot and also wants to explore (garden full of interesting corners) so I'll just let him out for short times then. Thankyou for all your advice :)
