Help needed cat constantly sick

I'm looking to see if anyone has any advice I have a cat who is 7 and is sick practically every time she eats. There's quite often a furball/hairball in it too but other times it's just bile. I've tried various dry food brands that are supposed to help but still having the same issues. She's a house cat. Can anyone help?

We had a cat who was very like that. James Wellbeloved food seemed to be the only one he really tolerates, and even then he was sick fairly frequently. Sorry to not have better advice - I expect you've tried that already?

ShowOfHands · 04/07/2017 09:20

What has the vet said? Is this a new behaviour?

So far I have tried a special Iams one and a special Purina one. Not tried James Wellbeloved will get that and give it a go.

To be honest I've not taken her to the vet as she isn't unwell otherwise and the vet has told me she's the most aggressive cat they have on their "books" (She's fine in house etc but attacks out of fear at the vet I think!) I'm trying to exhaust all avenues before having to take her.

I give her half a pouch in morning and half a pouch at night and she is sick again almost immediately. Sick after dry food, sick after treats.

I have a 2 year old and disgusting as it is I'm just waiting for the day he picks it up!

It could be constipation, every time my cat ate she threw up she was food sensitive at the best of times so I didn't realise straight away but after an enema (poor thing) she was all good.

hilbil21 · 04/07/2017 09:40

Don't think it's constipation she does a poo a day Smile

A friend had a cat that became ill like that and the vet said to try giving it small amounts of tinned tuna. Worth a try?

Is she bolting her food? My boycat occasionally bolts his food & is sick almost immediately afterwards - found some sick the other day that was complete kibbles! It is quite disgusting the way his sister sometimes can be found eating warm vomit with signs of pleasure, but it's just food that's gone in & right out again.

Crossed fingers, after well over a year my indoor babies haven't yet gifted me with a hairball despite the house still being filled by clouds of soft underfur. I feed them a mix of Royal Canin Indoor cat & Royal Canin Anti-furball as their kibble. They seem to pass all the fur OK, though it can be a bit odd poo picking & the bits are sort of strung together sometimes by hair {eek} !

hilbil21 · 04/07/2017 11:34

I don't know what you mean by bolting but as soon as it's in it's out again and can often just be chewed up food

Gobbling it down as fast as possible, like she is starving & hasn't eaten for days. Mine have their kibbles ad lib, but now & again Boycat seems to remember his feral days & eats like his first meal for ages.

isadorable · 04/07/2017 13:55

It could be early signs of kidney trouble. Does she drink a lot?

hilbil21 · 04/07/2017 14:22

Yes to both of the last posts. Think I had better make a trip to the vets Blush

It won't do any harm to get her checked - don't worry about whether she is aggressive, unfortunately, for them it's part the job. There may be nothing wrong, but if there is it's better to get treatment early to keep your cat comfortable and before any damage is done.

When my boy was ill and bringing up bile, I found it helped if I got up and gave him half a pouch in the night and then small meals throughout the day.

Ollivander84 · 04/07/2017 14:52

Mine was doing this for a bit, the vet gave him a steroid jab for his over grooming and the vomiting stopped too

isseywithcats · 04/07/2017 18:46

as a 7 year old that is throwing up bile please take to the vets it could be the start of kidney problems and if the cats aggressive at the vets ask them to use a crush cage to examine her (not as bad as it sounds just a cage that goes inwards ) i lost my 8 year old to exactly the same symptoms, if you can get near her mouth smell her breath if it smells like nail varnish remover then definitely one of the symptoms too and look for wheat free foods. and try her with plain boiled chicken or fish for a couple of days if shes ok on them it might be the fact shes on dry food only and not getting enough liquids

Vinorosso74 · 04/07/2017 18:50

I think it's worth a vet visit. Out cat used to be quite a puker turned out she had liver problems and IBD.

Icequeen01 · 04/07/2017 20:11

I had a cat who threw up a lot and it turned out he had pancreatitus. I would definitely get him checked by the vet just to be sure everything is ok.

caffeinestream · 04/07/2017 21:00

Yeah, definitely get him to the vet.

One of mine will only tolerate grain-free food. He gets the runs on every other brand we've tried. It's expensive but it's worth it to make sure he's healthy.

cat234 · 04/07/2017 21:30

sounds like a vet trip is needed. depending on how bad she is, it may be that they need to sedate her to examine her, weigh her, feel her abdomen, and do blood tests etc.

Olinguito · 05/07/2017 00:45

My cat is very aggressive at the vets too, out of fear. I don't know if this would help with your cat, but I ask for the first appointment of the session, so that we don't spend much time in the waiting room with other animals, which helps to keep her calmer. I also cover her carrier with a towel so she can't see out. Otherwise she can be growling in her carrier before we even go in to see the vet and it goes steadily downhill from there!

VallarMorghulis · 05/07/2017 01:58

One of my cats was always sick after eating, he was a gobbler and he would just sick up undigested food. I tried all sorts of foods, dry, wet, with no improvement. The only thing he tolerates is Royal Canin Digestive Care, the kibble is big and encourages proper chewing. It's a bit pricey but worth it, as it doesn't all get wasted!

chemenger · 05/07/2017 16:59

If it is hairball related I am having some success with adding a teaspoon of olive oil to her food every few days. We've gone from every day vomiting to only occasionally.
