Why wouldn't you return to the breeder?

On a local Facebook group I'm currently part of, a lady is selling a five month old British Short Hair. The cat is gorgeous, and I asked why she was selling. She is allergic, and didn't know until she brought the cat home two months ago. I asked if she'd contacted the breeder as nearly all good breeders I've encountered would take a cat they bred back (or would at least appreciate being informed). Anyway, she doesn't want to contact the breeder, and would prefer to sell the cat on Facebook (I'm assuming to recoup the money she paid for it). No checks, no vetting, she's just happy to sell her on to anyone prepared to pay for her. Makes me so sad for this poor little baby who's being passed from home to home.

Ah poor kitty!

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2017 12:56

Because she didn't use a reputable breeder. Because money is more important than the welfare of this poor kitty.

RubbishMantra · 03/07/2017 13:00

Presuming she had the kitten from 3 months, it took her 2 months to realise she was allergic? Hmm More likely didn't realise that kittens can be destructive little hooligans at times, as well as being cute.

It's unlikely the breeder will refund the full amount, after deducting jabs, flea/worm treatments etc. Is she selling kitten on FB for what a breeder would charge, (£500+)?

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2017 13:02

Or it has a medical condition? She can't afford the neutering or its already pg? Bet she has no more than a mobile number or FB contact for this "breeder" Angry

OrangeJulius · 03/07/2017 13:07

Do breeders normally refund any of the purchase price? In all my contracts it says the breeder has first refusal if rehoming necessary, however there is nothing about reimbursement in that circumstance.

So I presume this lady is just after whatever £££ she can get.

It's a blue point BSH so really very pretty and unusual. She's asking £500 for it (which I assume she paid for it, but that was when it was a more "desireable" age). I think you're right Mantra that she now realises the work involved and wants to get rid - two months I guess is long enough for you to get to the end of your tether because you didn't do any research. No mention of neutering or jabs, all the ad says is:

"British Short Hair cat, 5 months, comes with her potty and stand - £500" - she means the litter tray and little cat tree.

I just keep thinking of the little thing all the time.

You're right Orange. Just had a gander at Little M's contract; "I(the buyer) agree that the kitten shall not at any time be resold or re-homed without the breeder’s prior knowledge. The breeder may be able to take the kitten back or assist in re-homing him/her. No monies will be paid or refunded by the breeder for the kitten."

Vinorosso74 · 03/07/2017 13:34

Hmm, sounds like money is the main thing here not the welfare of the poor cat.
Either she is bored of the cat already, it has some health problem, is pregnant.
Surely a reputable breeder would take a cat back if there was an allergy issue but how many are actually reputable?

Bogburglar75 · 03/07/2017 13:38

Have to say that when we got BogCat, having had an allergy sitting with DH, the breeder was quite clear that if DHs allergies resurfaced she would be happy to take BogCat back and would be able to rehome him very easily

like he was going anywhere once we set eyes on him

Want2beme · 03/07/2017 20:04

How awful. Poor puss. She's obviously not a cat lover or she wouldn't be able to part with it.

NC4now · 03/07/2017 20:11

Ohhh 😢
Five months is when they should be getting neutered. She's trying to recoup her costs, but a FB page isn't the way.
Our little guy didn't come with a contract. I was quite naive when we got him and thought because he had a nice life, living with his mum and siblings in a room of their own, with dad in a run outside, that everything was fine.
I've sometimes wondered after reading on here whether it was all ok.
There are a lot of good people willing to pay good £££ for BSH kittens, but they wouldn't pay full price on FB.
Poor little kitten.

NC4now · 03/07/2017 20:13

Actually, we got BSH because they are supposed to be less allergic, and I haven't had a problem with NCat. Other people's cats set me off but not him.

stressystressy · 03/07/2017 21:33

Yes, she likely got it from an unscrupulous breeder on Facebook in the first place. I just see it and think of the opportunists who'll take the cat on and breed her for the pretty kittens. Ugh.

I think I've had such a strong reaction to it because even though I know it goes on, I never look at Gumtree or anything so it's not in my face - this on the other hand was so blatant and just popped up on my feed. How people can treat animals with such stone cold heartedness blows my mind.

Sadly people don't care about these living beings they are a source of income, pretty creatures, toys which can be dumped on the doorstep of a charity once bored with etc
