Is he off his food or being awkward (Harry again!)

He's currently having Pronefra for his kidney issues and, to start with, he was taking it in his food without a problem. Now he's eating less and less of his breakfas and dinner containing the Pronefra. Last night he ate a quarter of his dinner and the same again for his breakfast this morning.

I really don't think there's a lot wrong with him as he practically inhales his tuna pouch for lunch so I'm thinking he's either gone off his breakfast and dinner pouches or he's decided he doesn't like the taste of Pronefra! The vet has agreed I can take him off it for a few days to try and work out which.

We've been told that if it's that he doesn't like the Pronefra the vet wants us to syringe it directly into Harry's mouth. I immediately said no to that as I'm not comfortable opening his mouth because of his jaw. I'd never forgive myself if I damaged it again.

As he won't eat the renal food I have no idea what to do if he won't take the phosphate binder either...

Thanks Elle, that's good to know. I'll try reintroducing the Pronefra after a couple of days as he did eat it at first but if he still doesn't eat then I will be back at the vets. I'm sure they think I'm just being difficult!

Thanks Toddler, I'll pass them on to him tonight! Sending the same back to Snorg and Fatty.

As Harry has eaten every pouch since Monday lunchtime we've reintroduced the Pronefra into this mornings breakfast and he's had some but hasn't eaten as enthusiastically as the last few days.

My pet sitter suggested keeping the Pronefra in the fridge as apparently it reduces the flavour so we're trying that but I'm resigned to the fact he might not be getting it all the time, if at all!

I would really suggest switching phosphate binders- it's more important he gets some with every meal, regardless of brand Smile

Do you know if they do a tasteless one? The little sod manages to taste everything! I'm resigned to the fact that he might not take anything, in which case we'll just have to let nature take it's course Sad

Maybe all isn't lost - DH has just messaged me to say that a lot of his breakfast has now gone...

Ipakitine is a powder and the amount you give us small so much easier to hide

He ate nearly all his breakfast, but very grudgingly. I've spoken to the nurse and she is going to have a chat with the vet and find out what else he can have. She also said they would take back the big bottle of Pronefra as it hasn't been opened.

I also plucked up the courage to tell her that, if we can't find something he's happy with, we'll just let nature take it's course and she was fine with that and said it's all about quality not quantity. I feel so much better having said it and having her agree with me. Obviously I hope it won't come to that!

So the plan is now that we keep trying the Pronefra for the time being, the vet thinks of something else if he's really not happy and if that doesn't work we just keep him happy for his senior years.

This cat is going to give me a nervous breakdown!
