Kitten with pneumonia

MyOhMyG · 03/07/2017 01:01

Our 8 week old kitten has had trouble breathing tonight and barely moving.

Had a late visit to the vets a couple of hours ago an she has said he is very poorly and has aspiration pneumonia, she said she didn't even need to do an X-ray as she could hear it by his chest. And a high temp.

She gave him an antibiotic injection, and anti inflammatory injection.

He's back home has had a couple of sips of water with a syringe, is a lot quieter than he was earlier. Has a fan on him and keep stroking him with a damp flannel. But still seems to be breathing a bit heavy.

Has anyone else had experience with this?

Really are in two minds as weather to wait until the morning to see how he is, or take him back to vets tonight to have him put to sleep Sad am desperately trying to look out for some sort of improvement but don't know what to look for? Understand he isn't going to be bouncing around like he was straight away. But also don't want him to suffer! We haven't even had him a week :(

Any advice?

I'm so sorry he's poorly. How is he this morning?

I haven't had any experience of this but I wouldn't rush into having him PTS, I would be guided by the vet. Hopefully the antibiotic injection will kick in soon and he'll start feeling better.

I'm a human Dr not a vet but - this sounds hopefully treatable? Sounds like the kitten was maybe separated from mum a bit soon, do you trust where he's come from? Is there a problem with his swallowing for him to have aspirated?
See what they say this morning - obviously if he's not going to get better that's totally different but if it's a illness, admittedly very serious, that he'll recover from, then persist however distressing it is to see him unwell. Thinking of you Flowers

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2017 09:10

Don't have him put to sleep. Pneumonia is easily treatable. When one of mine was very ill I thought I'd have to put her to sleep but by the morning she had picked up. Cat can bounce back quickly.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2017 09:12

I think you need to go back to the place you got him from and let them know.

MyOhMyG · 03/07/2017 10:10

I too thought it was treatable. Have been up with him most of the night giving him water through a syringe, he won't drink himself or eat anything. He just wants to be cuddled on the sofa.

At 4am he was sat awake silent I started stroking him and he was purring, I thought he was going to be fine!

He's cuddled up on the sofa atm but his breathing doesn't sound good.

We are taking him to the vets now and will see what they say, they did say about a drip yesterday but it would be very hard with a kitten and that he could not make it anyway.
We rang them again last night to see if there was anything at all we could possibly do to help him while he was at home and she didn't say a lot, she said about looking at him today but mentioned we need to take into consideration his quality of life?

I don't know if that was here way of saying putting him to sleep would be best as a drip would be too hard? Feel so sorry for him. He's quieter when he's being cuddled up bless him.

Can't s e why putting a drip in a kitten is so difficult. As long as it's well secured.

isadorable · 03/07/2017 11:50

Hope things are going OK. One of my kittens was on a drip for five days I think. She got sick - i cant remember what was wrong. Anyway my vets were great and she made a full recovery. They look after her for me during the day while I was at work and she came home in the evenings for me to supervise. She had a cannula and it was no worse than any other cat being treated. It saved her life so I was delighted. She came back to normal quite quickly.

MyOhMyG · 03/07/2017 12:12

Well he's home! Have been given some food to give him through a syringe he's had another injection of antibiotics today, and have been given antibiotic drops and anti inflammatory drops. Vet he seems a lot better than yesterday and we did well looking after him through the night Grin so fingers crossed he will get better!

Well done you and of course him. They can go downhill very fast at that age but they can all recover fast. Good luck

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/07/2017 12:35

That's good news, I'm so pleased for you and him!

Please keep us updated on his progress.

RubbishMantra · 03/07/2017 12:48

I'm glad your kitten's recovering, well done to you both!

Just as an aside, your vet sounds a bit like a naysayer. Like Toddler pointed out, it shouldn't be impossible to get a line into a kitten. They can use an ultrasound to find veins if need be.

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2017 12:49

Where did he come from? Have you contacted them? Others may be affected?
Hope he's better soon.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2017 13:54

Magic was critically ill and completely shut down and they got a line in her!

MyOhMyG · 03/07/2017 14:55

Dp paid £30 for him of the pets 4 home app? He was a surprise! I have to admit I was a bit iffy at first but after having him cuddling up to me on the sofa I couldn't of got rid of him, I can't wait now for him to be back to his normal self bouncing around the place and grabbing at my ankles!Grin

Have tried calling and texting them had no reply, apparently she messaged dp before he got him saying she was going away in 2 days so could he get him asap which made me a bit Hmm. She said he had been wormed and flead but his tummy looked really bloated so we had him treated. Have only had him a week today!

Oh jeez. Pets 4 homes. Kittens are clearly a mint making scheme for them. Hence the 2 days.
And a surprise kitten? I hope you have his head a wobble? They can live for over 20 years and aren't a cheap pet. Old girl needed over £60 a month spent on meds at the end.

MyOhMyG · 03/07/2017 16:01

I know! We spent £100 for him to be seen late last night, that isn't including meds etc either!

OP posts:
ElizaDontlittle · 03/07/2017 20:05

They can't make that much at only £30 - I agree OP that you assume the worst, treat him yourself as you've done, and also assume he's younger than they said and may have been separated a bit early.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/07/2017 11:50

Awwww bless him. Poor little sweetie pie.
Glad he's feeling better.

RubbishMantra · 04/07/2017 14:48

How is he today OP? Still recovering I hope.

EachandEveryone · 04/07/2017 14:54

Bless him. When hes better we will need a photo mind.

MyOhMyG · 04/07/2017 15:11

He's fine thanks all. He spent the night cuddled up to Dp on the sofa bless him, he's got meds to take for 4 weeks hopefully he'll be ok by then, he's making a slight noise when breathing but was darting across the living room this morning :) having to feed him food and water through a syringe.
