Realllly want a Maine Coon but we have pet rats - is it the worst idea ever?

Disclaimer: our previous cats have all been rescues! The rescues round here seem to have a lot of nervous old cats who can't be around children or other pets. Other rat owners on a rat forum I'm on have suggested that a kitten is a better bet for getting used to rats.

And I've always wanted a Maine Coon. But they're great hunters aren't they? The rats are in the playroom on top of a cupboard but I'm worried about them getting stressed or, you know, eaten. They do come out to play every day but we could keep the cat out of the room they're in.

I'm not going to do it regardless, if it's a terrible idea I won't do it, I don't want unhappy animals in the house! Any advice appreciated!

Can depend on the cat.

My friend has a rescue Maine Coon who was unfortunately declawed by previous owners and happily coexists with her guinea pigs, who sometimes roam free.

I think most cats are nervous of cavies, no tail is a huge help to them. We looked after friend's Guinea pigs on regular basis. My always-hunting cats ignored the GPs even while constantly bringing home voles, moles, shrews, baby rats...

I would expect you to have to keep them very separate from any cat, I don't think breed comes into it. My moggie is a great hunter, has even broke into a rabbit hutch before now and injured but thankfully not killed the resident rabbit.

People who have had cats and rats and no mishaps, we're the rats stressed, do you think? Were you?

There are LOADS of rescue Maine Coons, plenty are retired Queens - lots of them are pretty much fearful wimps. I really do think you would be able to rehome one that was low risk to the rats. Many of them will have been indoor cats etc.

You do realise that some are a hairy nightmare both for vacuuming and brushing...

Forgot to mention earlier, as a child we had birds, a hamster and a cat all at once. Everyone was fine as long as birds were kept up high.

After the start I think he just wanted to make friends with Geronimouse the hamster. Used to sit calmly and sleep beside the cage.
