Anyone's cat had a dental?

If your cat has had a dental, I just wondered how they were afterwards in themselves? Also, if they could eat ok, seemed pain free? My 17 year old cat is having one this week and I'm a little worried for her, but it's a case of doing it now as the risks will only increase as she gets older.

My 15yr old girl had it about 6th months ago. She was mildly pissed off when I picked her up and farted for about a week after but got over it quite quickly. She had soft food only for a few days after as it can make their gums quite tender.

P's. The vet gave her something for pain and she didn't seem to suffer to much in that respect. She def wanted more sleep and more cuddles after though (if that were possible!).

Harry, my 12 year old, has had two. The first one was a bit different because he had a fractured jaw and as well as a dental infection but he recovered quite quickly afterwards. He struggled to eat but that was because he loved dry food and I had to move him on to wet because of his jaw.

The second one was last December and was much better. He was drowsy when he came out but ate fine (he was on wet food only by that time) and, apart from the shaved patches, you wouldn't have known there was anything wrong with him.

He was given Loxicom on both occasions to help with the pain and he took that in his food without any problems.

I hope your girl gets on OK.

MCat's had one, just a scale and polish though, no extractions or other complications like poor Harry in Pink's post.

He wasn't in any pain afterwards, and ate and drank no problem. I wasn't even given any Metacam for him.

Mine did, but he had a GA because he was such a grumpy old boy.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/06/2017 11:23

I'm glad MCat got on OK Rubbish. I've just remembered Harry had a bone infection when he had the second one so that probably explains the Loxicom. The poor sod doesn't do anything by halves Sad

RubbishMantra · 26/06/2017 11:25

I think they give GAs as standard Bike, can you imagine attempting to put noisy tooth descaling equipment in a wriggling cat's mouth? Chomp!

WeirdAndPissedOff · 26/06/2017 11:26

Our 11yo (at the time) had a dental and extractions a couple of years ago. She recovered well in herself, and has been much better for it long term!
She did get a slight infection in one gum afterwards, but an antibiotic shot and some extra loxicom cleared it up fairly quickly.

I did worry sick about her throughout the op, but it was definitely worth it, and all in all she recovered really well.

RubbishMantra · 26/06/2017 11:28

Oh I know, poor Harry. He's had a difficult year +, with his jaw then kidneys.

Thanks everyone. She's having it done tomorrow and definitely needs at least one tooth extraction and a de-scaling. I'll make sure I'll ask if painkillers are available for afterwards.

She's been in for her dental. Vet phoned a while ago to say she coped okay with the anaesthetic and still coming around. She's had two top molars and one lower molar taken out. I just have to wait until I can collect my girl.

Oh glad she's had it and it's out of the way! She'll probably be feeling a bit sorry for herself but it'll be worth it. When can you pick her up?

starfish4 · 28/06/2017 14:58

Hopefully around 5pm, but I need to phone before as they were late doing the operation due to an emergency. They close at 7.30pm so at least we've got some time to play with if they need to get her longer.

She's got wet cat food anyway with small chunks of meat, but I've got her some Webbox lick-y-lix which she likes and some cat milk so at least I should be able to get something down her over the next couple of days.

Hope she's home safe and sound and having lots of cuddles! That cat pate is amazing, my cat loves it!

starfish4 · 29/06/2017 08:30

Thanks pinky. She had a couple of mouthfuls of food last night and has had a whole pouch this morning. She looks a bit more alert. As she's an old lady they wanted to do her follow up check up sooner than normal, so she's got to go back today - she's not going to thank me for that! Apparently every tooth came out really easily so she hasn't had to have stitches which is good.

One of mine had a dental before I adopted them. She must have recovered quite quickly as the rescue lady couldn't remember which one had had it!
