Hi I have a year old kitten (her sibling was knocked over and had to be Pts in the mean time we got a German shepherd rescue bitch is getting on well with the cat chases her but they are playing, the cats granny has had kittens and I'm going to take one this will be ages away as they have only been born 2 weeks what's best way of introducing kitten to both the cat and the dog, introducing the dog to original cat was fine as the cat was here first? The cat is missing the other cat so hopefully it will work out

When you bring the new kitten home, have it one room which is not accessible to the other animals. Let it be in there quietly with water and food and a litter tray and give it the blanket from your dog/cat beds. You can then bring the kitten out and introduce briefly and see what the reaction is.

Hopefully the dog will just think 'oh another cat' and be fine but the existing cat may be more of an issue.

Is your existing cat male/female? Neutered? What sex is the new kitten?

It can be quite time consuming having a new kitten as you know and introducing to existing animals needs to be done very carefully as it's so small it can easily be injured.

You could also let both cats use litter trays and then swap them over to get each other's scent. But it's essential they have separate litter trays to use, are fed in different areas to each other (we have four cats and four eating stations in the house!) and two or three water bowls so that all animals have the option to drink without feeling threatened.

Obviously we will require photos.

Thanks for the reply, mycatsa pirate I didn't really think that my cat wouldn't like the kitten hopefully they'll take to each other, I didn't even think about having separate litter trays, I'll sort that out I've loads of expensive litter as my cat doesn't really use the litter only the odd time at night, what are the chances of them not liking each other?or does it depend on the cat?Im hoping they will get on my cat is a female 11 months old has been spade she's very friendly and was hand reared the new cat will be a male and I will get spade asap they would be from the same family however the mother of the new cat lives on a farm and is wild.

The only risk is that the new kitten will try to dominate your existing cat as he gets older. Male cats can have the tendency to do that so it will be good if they are socialised together from the get go. And please get him neutered as soon as he's old enough and before he's allowed out as he will either go off chasing females or start scrapping with every cat in the neighbourhood over his 'patch'.

I hope it goes smoothly. One of my friends took in a stray male cat who was pretty wild but she has recently got a female kitten and her boy cat adores the little girl cat. The first time the kitten was allowed out he kept going out in to the garden after her, picking her up by her scruff and bringing her back indoors! So funny! But really sweet. He grooms her, they spoon to sleep and are really close. So fingers crossed that your girl goes into protective mode with your new boy.
