Breeding cats?

Hello everyone, this may be a ridiculous idea on my part, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I have 2 rescue cats and plan to have more, but I do have a selfish dream of getting a purebred female cat (currently investigating breeds), breeding her once and keeping all the kittens. I'd then spay/neuter all.

We have the space and money, and I'm a very long term cat owner and am experienced in hand rearing and cats with additional needs (but did still fuss when my littlest was ill before his jabs).

I do note that most existing breeders don't sell for active register (but am aware of a few who do).

Is anyone aware of how a person might go about the above mentioned plan? Or does anyone want to tell me I am being silly? I'm not too worried about registration because I don't want to sell or do shows, but don't want to support a dodgy backyard breeder either. I'd consider importing a cat, but the whole importing process just doesn't sound so nice for the poor animal!

I'd consider adopting a whole litter of kittens, but I think DP will adjust better to the above setup.

Any thoughts welcome. Basically I want a pile of cats, but want to do it really kindly for all involved. Would consider doing same with a lovely moggie.

Please be reasonably gentle!

Just curious why you seem to have dismissed slipping the odd extra rescue kitten in one by one (or two by two)? Or taking on a rescue moggie who is pregnant or has a litter - you could tell DP you are just fostering, then can't bear to give any of them up?

I do understand this OP.

Rearing kittens is magical.

But there is a better way - volunteer yourself to home a pregnant moggy from your local CPL Smile

Ooh I'd love to be a foster mum to pg cats.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/06/2017 09:24

I'm sure a rescue would grab you with both hands of offers to foster pregant cats!

I've considered this and wouldn't say no/haven't dismissed it. DP is the nicest person in the world, but tends to need time to adjust. An initially pregnant cat would be too similar to bringing 6 cats home at once.

I also want a cat who is generally happy indoors, and also wouldn't be of risk to my two re possible infection. Most rescues won't send to an indoor home. Cookie thankfully is afraid of the garden and Biscuit's indoor status has yet to be determined! Cat run pending, but will be pending a while.

I'm also a full time doctor who would like to plan my annual leave in a little bit of advance of kittens!

And purely selfishly, I'd like to know for once where my cats came from, that they've been well socialised and what kind of temperaments are likely. I know it's not all down to breed/breeder, but plenty can be. Some will even screen for genetic diseases. And as a child I hated giving away kittens (pre the era of neutering in my area) and would love to keep a family together.

I do volunteer a little in my spare time and frequently donate. Keeping an open mind.
