How to baby proof with cat/litter tray

It looks like it won't be long before DC starts crawling so trying to "baby-proof" the house.

DCat is 5yrs old, was originally an indoor cat until we moved into current house when she was around 18mths and she now goes into garden and not much further! and then comes back inside to use the tray.

She stays inside overnight, and as she likes to have a midnight dash around and wake everyone up, she has always been shut in the lounge with her food/water/litter trays/etc.

I need to do something with the litter trays so that dc doesn't touch them. I can't move them out of the lounge as this is where dcat is overnight and previous attempts at moving the trays have ended in "presents" being left on the floor.

What can I do with the trays? Would a fire guard around them work? I've asked a friend who said that they made a "hidden litter tray" by cutting a hole in a cabinet and putting the litter tray on a shelf- I don't know if it's worth trying this as I don't think dcat would work out where the tray had gone (and don't really fancy cutting holes into furniture just in case!) but has anyone got any experience in this that would make it worthwhile?

Would they use a covered tray?

We tried a covered tray when we first got her, as a kitten, and she would not go in. She won't go in the igloo type cat beds or anything like that either.

I think at least a hidden tray (in a cupboard or something) would have more room overhead but I'm just not sure she'll figure it out

Is Dcat out during the day when DC is around? I'd lift trays at that time and put them somewhere out of the way - inside if you have room (utility?) or outside under a large upturned plastic crate.
