Our new kitty 9 wks old now came to us 3 weeks ago with fleas! I got a treatment from the vet for her and our older cat and treated them both. I also hot washed all bedding, our bedding, cushions etc and hovered house top to bottom repeating a week later and again this week. I checked kitty and other cat this week and both had fleas still, back to vet got more treatment, vet said fleas become resistant to all the treatments and can take a while to get rid of for god sake I'm worn out!! My little girl and myself have had lots of bites not so much this last week but driving me nuts. I cannot use any of the room flea sprays or flea bombs because we all have asthma and I also have a bad chest so all chemical sprays are out! Are their any natural remedies to get rid of fleas for good? and should I be combing the cats coats to remove fleas? I have been doing this but don't know if I'm doing the right thing? Any advice on what you do to rid the flea bags away and any natural remedies appreciated!

Advocate- can be used twice in a month on vet's advice.

There's also a tablet that the vet can give which is short acting but kills them very quickly then you apply the advocate as usual.

Ask the vet about a flea injection too.

Flea spray the house with Indorex, get 2 cans , you'll use them.its not very strong and we have asthma, spray and shut the doors then go out for a while. The smell doesn't linger.

Yes comb the cat frequently, you get loads off doing that.

Were the fleas jumpy or were you able to pick them up and squash them? If you were the treatment IS working.

I would not be giving a kitten Advocate drops (or any other drops for that matter) twice on one month.

My cats were infested when I got them. I woke up to dead fleas in my bed. ConfusedSad

Take one cat at a time - put the cat in an empty bath tub (makes it difficult for cat to get out of). Get a flea comb and a cup filled with cold water. Comb cat while it's in the (empty!!) tub. For each comb through, dunk the comb in the water (v quickly) to drown the fleas. Repeat for each cat every day. Get used to being scratched - you don't feel it after a while and tbh I would rather be scratched than have fleas living off my cats.

I counted approx 50-60 drowned fleas per cat not incl fleas killed by them / crap flea treatment I tried at the time (only Advocate works in my area).

I wouldn't either without instruction from the vet,I made that really clear in my post. I did it on my vet's advice.

I would spray with indorex, a whole can does a three bed house & it works on eggs and larvae. It's not that bad on the chest. The kittens can't be left in a room you've just sprayed though.

The injection stops fleas breeding but doesn't actually kill fleas.

We use advocate, frontlines not got a great reputation now.

All my pets have comfortis tablet. All fleas gone in 24 hours

Diatomaceous earth worked for me. It makes a mess though and I would suggest a mask putting it down and hoovering up if you have asthma. It's non toxic though as works mechanically not through pesticides. This is for the house, not the cats!

A bit of washing up liquid added to some water in a bowl, put any fleas you catch into it, the soap stops them getting back out.
Food grade diatomaceous earth (available from Amazon) scattered onto the floor, brush it in & leave it down for a few days. So long as you get the food grade it's harmless to pets. It's a powder so wear a mask when you put it down to avoid breathing it in.
Maybe a Johnsons4Fleas tablet for the older cat - not sure about for the kitten, make sure you read the packet carefully - it kills fleas quickly but only lasts 24 hours. It's the same stuff as Capstar in the US. Can buy it from Pets at Home.
As someone else mentioned, Comfortis from the vet kills them quick and lasts about a month. Can be some side effects tho so talk to the vet to see if it's ok for yours.
Hoover endlessly, put a flea collar into the hoover to kill them, make sure you empty the dust straight into a bag outside, tie the top and put it into the outside bin.
Keep the cats out of the room, wear a mask and spray Indorex or similar everywhere then shut the door and stay out for at least half hour, then open the window to air the room.
Insect repellant on your legs hopefully will keep them away.

The on the spot flea treatment became less and less effective for my cat, so we switched to an injection. The vet recommends an injection for flea treatment every six months, it costs about £30.

If you can spray the house, Indorex is absolutely fab and will kill all fleas in the home. You have to leave the house for a few hours after spraying, but it is worth the inconvenience. Indorex and the anti flea injection finally enabled us to get on top of the flea problem in my house. It's a good job cats are so cute, isn't it? Smile
