Transition from litter tray

Purplesky2 · 12/06/2017 10:45

My kitten 6months is about to embark on new adventures through the cat flap. I'm keen to be rid of the litter tray. Is there a way to transition this - put it but he back door?

Tray outside during the day.
Tape flap open until confident going through!!
Practice with dcat once ready for flap down!!

You should keep the tray. I think it's really antisocial to let your cat crap in other people's gardens (or worse, your own)

I am a cat lover and have a cat

Keep the tray. Your kitten will need to stay shut in at night and in case of cattery or vet stay it's a good habit to have them used to using one. It's part of owning a cat.

We adopted a fully grown cat recently & obviously had to keep her in. She used her tray no problem. So 3 weeks in we installed a cat flap & she's happily been going in & out.

There has not been a single poo in the tray since. I realise it's antisocial to let them poo in people's gardens but frankly she hasn't had the same memo!

You need to keep them in at night and it seems cruel to make them cross their legs all night. We've never got rid of Harry's tray and, while he rarely uses it, I wouldn't dream of taking it away.

Tigress

Yes, some do decide that. I just meant you should give them the chance.

My old cat only shat in our garden - she obviously hadn't read the books that say they don't do it in their own garden Grin

We kept ours so they had somewhere to go overnight. We also installed an outdoor litter tray - like a tiny shed- to discourage them from crapping in other people's gardens.

Part of being a pet-owner is making sure you clean up after them

I put the litter tray out on the patio when it was nice and the doors were opened, obviously you'll need to supply something inside if you decide to keep them in at night (we eventually gave up on that idea with our boy as he was a real outdoorsy cat (he wanted to go out before we let him). I'm not saying mine ever went in other people's gardens, but my girl used our grass and my boy our borders for their business.
