Clumping or non clumping litter ? Which is best.

That's it really. I feel unsuccessful with both. Clumping sticks to the tray and doesn't scoop out well until totally dry. Non clumping means wee sits in the tray until it's completely replaced. Is there a good brand you can recommend.
How boring can a thread topic be !!!

I switched to the wood litter.

Easy to scoop poo and doesn't stink.

FannyWisdom · 08/06/2017 08:16

Pettex is the big brand but if you have an asda try a bag of their basic wood litter.
Asia own brand smells slightly less of pine and is a lot cheaper.

TizzyDongue · 08/06/2017 08:17

Clumping - but that's all I've experienced to be honest. I don't use anything at the moment as he's a litter box refused. But I'll dig out (Smile) the name of the one that clumped the best.

Ruhrpott · 08/06/2017 08:19

I have just changed to pets at home wood pellets litter and really like it. The rescue lady I got my cats from recommended it and it's fairly cheap

FannyWisdom · 08/06/2017 09:00

£3.50 for 10 litres.
Not the expensive pine fragranced tiger one.

Clumping doesn't stick to the tray if there is enough litter in there?

Heratnumber7 · 08/06/2017 09:47

Clumping.
We put a bin liner in the tray, and the litter in that. Easier to lift it all out to replace it.

dementedpixie · 08/06/2017 09:54

Clumping. I use a mix of stuff including super benek corn litter and worlds best corn litter which has 40% off at zooplus. You need to make it quite deep and allow the pee to dry a bit before scooping

RatOnnaStick · 08/06/2017 09:58

Clumping suits me better. Both my older cats prefer fine grain and use the tray a lot now they are less inclined to go outside if the weather is slightly less than perfect. It's easy to just scoop out the mess when necessary.

noenemee · 08/06/2017 10:04

I use the cheap ASDA wood pellets too, it's as good as any I've found.

Silverdream · 08/06/2017 11:20

Thanks I'm off to buy some wood pellet litter.

The litter is deep and I use a liner which she shreds. I've resorted to laying plastic liner on the bottom which I scout out via a recycling place.

She's a Bengal kitten and is very different from my fat old lazy tom. She's great but my word you know you have her.

Pets at home one is £5.59 for 30 litres

I use Bob Martin's silicon litter. Doesn't retain the wee smell as much and solids can go down the loo. One bag last about a week and my cat wees a lot (CKD).

caffeinestream · 09/06/2017 16:14

We use wood pellet litter here too. Got it free from someone who was doing their driveway - we have two van loads of it in the garage!

Easy to scoop, doesn't smell, easy to vacuum when they inevitably kick it everywhere, and biodegradable.

thegreylady · 13/06/2017 11:28

I use Catsan clumping which has been life changing! Wee lifts out in balls, no smell at all. It is on the dear side but I have 3 indoor cats and four litter trays. I use a litter locker too which I have found to be invaluable.

dementedpixie · 13/06/2017 12:27

One of Mine didn't like the sandy texture of the catsan clumping.

Lessthanaballpark · 13/06/2017 12:34

Ok this is a stupid question but: Is it ok to just change the type of litter or does it need to be mixed in with their old one for a while?

I have 2 kittens who've been with me for a week but want to change to wood pellets. So far they've been pooping perfectly because I used the same one as their breeder.

dementedpixie · 13/06/2017 13:16

I would gradually mix more and more in

Ficklemarket · 13/06/2017 14:24

Never clumping for kittens. They eat it, the little dears, and can clump in their stomachs.

dementedpixie · 13/06/2017 14:26

I changed to clumping around 4 months. Only one of mine tried to eat the original litter I had (non clumping) and grew out of it by 4 months

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/06/2017 15:15

I tried clumping (well Harry did!) and switched back to non clumping. Because Harry wees up the side of tray clumps of litter were welded on and I needed a garden trowel to chisel it off!

pigeoninthepantry · 13/06/2017 17:08

i've been wondering this as well, we have a new kitten coming in 2 weeks, but it seems such a minefield which one is best. I'm ordering a few bits and bobs from zooplus so ill get a few kinds and see what i think it works.

zooplus is good and is really good value for all sorts of pet things :)

dementedpixie · 13/06/2017 17:11

Also look at bitiba as it can be a little cheaper than zooplus too

silentpool · 13/06/2017 17:14

I do a mixture of wood pellets and clumping litter. Works well on smells and reduces the likelihood of cat piss concrete at the bottom of the tray.

Lessthanaballpark · 13/06/2017 21:03

Thanks. Today I bought a lovely shiny Cat tree that they looked at, went "meh" and went back inside an cardboard box which they found much more fun!
