Nervous Oriental Rescue

We have recently adopted a 2 year old oriental male from a breed rescue centre and he is still incredibly nervous (we have had him just over 2 weeks). We have 2 other female cats and he seems to be ok with them (still occasional hissing from them if he gets too close but generally tolerant) but its the humans he seems afraid of! He is runs at any noises and my DC being children terrify him (they have grown up around cats so they are very good with them but obviously we cant expect hushed voices etc all of the time).
His background is that he was a breeders stud but infertile so they gave him to the rescue (he is neutered now)
I have never had such a timid cat and I am worried that we are really stressing him out by being a busy family. Also my children are really sad that he seems to 'hate' them. Is there anything I can do to help him? We have the Feliway plug ins, he has a 'safe' room - is it just time? Will he ever get better?

Err picture needed. It is the MN rule.

I would say that you need to give him time. My boy took ages to settle and there were no little children to contend with. He is now happy to have cuddles on his terms but will forever be a scardy cat.

Aww he is very striking. He looks like the love child of my ginger tom and my feisty bengal 🤣

hes georgous it could be as he was at a breeders he may have been caged a lot so isnt used to run of the house, have you tried a feliway plug in

My two ex breeding queens were like this at first. It just takes time and patience and they'll come round.

He is adorable. I have a pure white cat who is a major scaredy cat. She is afraid of everything. She spends most of her time upstairs. I have 2 other cats and she's friendly with one of them, who barely tolerates her and my other female cat hates her, would love to get hold of her and wring her neck! I have to keepnth seperates. I've had her since she was 4 weeks old, so whatever happened to her prior to that, has certainly had a negative affect on her. I've given up trying to change her and now accept that she won't change. All the vets she's been to have said that she'll always be very nervous. I don't have children, so she doesn't have to deal with that aspect.

Hopefully, given time, he'll come out of his shell. Sadly, you don't know what he's been through in his life before you. He is gorgeous, and I hope he has a very happy life with you.

If he was a stud, then generally they are kept outside in a cage Sad to stop them spraying in the house. Then they get a female in with them for a few days every so often (to try and impregnate them). Then it is back to being on their own in a cage. So he probably isn't used to the space or noise. Can you get him a nice big cardboard box on its side and put a cat bed or blanket in it to give him somewhere to hide. Then just everyone be really nice to him lots until he gets used to the attention. Little tip, Orientals and Siamese for some reason seem to love men, so maybe the men/boys of the house give him extra attention. He should soon perk up. They also really love playing and my Oriental boy loves a rolled up ball of tin foil (about the size of a marble), and he will bat it around and pick it up in his mouth and bring it to you to roll for him.

No advice sorry, but what a stunningly handsome boy. I hope he settles in soon. Sounds like he'll have a lovely home with you.

Progress - he let my dd stroke him before he legged it when my ds made a noise! He is very sweet when he lets you get close, he rolls onto his back and purrs but at the same time is ridiculously skittish about noise. Thank you for your replies, I think like you all say he has probably been caged so being let into a house is quite scary. Hopefully he will settle in soon.
