I think we will be having to put my little old cat to sleep tomorrow

She is 22

She is hardly eating
She is drinking a bit more than normal
She hasn't used her tray for three days - she does go out to do ablutions but she always make sure we have something to do with her tray. Her stinky poos are her calling card.
When she changes direction her back legs wobble

Her autistic human is away on her holiday with her big sister so puss is sleeping alone - I have wondered if she is missing her human too much

DH has said we should take her to the vets tomorrow after work.

I can't think about it

Oh how sad!

But yes, you just take her to the vet asap as anything else is just not fair to your little cat. They suffer quietly but the signs are all there that she needs you to show her a last act of kindness

Wolfiefan · 05/06/2017 22:43

I'm so sorry. If she's not eating or using her tray and she's unsteady on her feet then it doesn't sound good. 22 wow.
It's horrid but we have to make the right choice for them. Even though it hurts us like mad. The last great kindness. Flowers

We know she is deaf and demented - she is lost on the landing as I type

Oh god

Oh poor cat Sad such a hard decision to make

AcrossthePond55 · 05/06/2017 23:18

I found this helpful when we had to make this heartbreaking decision. Peace.

It's a terrible time for you. See what your vet says tomorrow. Thinking of you.

GRW · 06/06/2017 06:17

22 is an amazing age. I'm sorry you are facing a decision to put her to sleep, but it's the kindest act. You will miss her, they are like part if the furniture after such a long life.

She has bloody eaten something this morning!!!

Bloody bloody cat

Oh bless. I would keep a close eye on her over the coming days. Cats are notorious at hiding when they aren't happy.
Is she steadier on her feet? Can't believe I'm asking a stranger this but any litter tray action?! Blush

inaclearingstandsaboxer · 06/06/2017 12:55

No litter tray action ☹️

I have made an appointment at 5:30pm with the vet. I got a bit emotional when I called and I have explained she might need to be pts but the vet might say otherwise.

My best mate who looks after her saw me at school this morning and I just broke down ... Sobbing in the middle of a school playground is not a good look.

I am lurching from 'this is the right thing, she is 22 and of herself' and ' we can just keep going with her and I can't let her go yet'

Her human is autistic as I have already said and is on holiday with an older sibling. Human is mid twenties and therefore not known the world without puss cat.

Human has no idea what is going on and tbh hasn't asked about puss cat all week - typical single tracked mind!

Oh how hard... her human will hurt more if cat is pts whilst (s)he is away but you have to do the right thing by your old girl. She is gorgeous, I am so sorry you are in this situation. How confusing that they rally a bit just as you feel sure. Thinking of you Flowers

Wolfiefan · 06/06/2017 13:21

Good luck with appointment. Could well not be time yet. I always used to think it was about preventing pain and suffering. Our vet used the word dignity. That decided it for me as old girl has none. Does your cat enjoy the things that have always made her happy?

LTBiscuit · 06/06/2017 17:32

Hope you're okay op, thinking of you whilst you're at the vets xx

Wolfiefan · 06/06/2017 18:37

Thinking of you too. Flowers

She is still with us !!!

I was already bawling as we walked into the consulting room

Lovely vet gave puss a thorough exam and said yes she is obviously very very old and riddled with arthritis. But apart from a heart murmur which we already knew about she said puss was quite fit.

So - puss is now on Loxicom which we know about as other puss was on it before her kidneys packed in a couple of years ago and she was 19 when she died.

I would rather puss lived a few months less in no pain than live longer but suffer.

Vet commended us on his beautifully groomed she is and how we seemed good cat parents which was lovely as I wonder if we do the right thing for her.

Regarding her eating - vet said if she likes it give it to her and she will probably eat more if she is pain free

Thank you all so much - this thread has made me cry a lot today

That's brilliant news, I am glad she's ok for now and hope the medicine will keep her comfortable. She is clearly very much loved.

lorisparkle · 06/06/2017 20:03

So glad to hear she is still with you. My lovely cat lived until 24! I was 26 and devastated!!!! We had taken him a few years earlier to the vet thinking that he was on his last legs but the vet gave him a jab and it seemed to revive him. We also got new kittens and although we initially kept them apart he quite liked them and regained some of his kitten spirit!

Wolfiefan · 06/06/2017 20:07

That's fantastic. Our old girl had awful arthritis and ended up on tramadol. But on the medication she was really very comfortable.
Such lovely news.
Perhaps a little something sprinkled in the food to tempt her? Mine used to love microwaved coley fish. Very easy to digest. Or some lik e lix.
Thinking ahead old girl had a heated whelping pad for the winter. Also known as butt warmer. Like a tiny electric blanket. Put it in her favourite spot. She would sit there all hunched on a cold day. Switch it on and she would visibly unfurl!
Such good news. I'm still smiling!

AcrossthePond55 · 06/06/2017 22:05

I'm so glad!

Threetoedsloth · 06/06/2017 22:16

Aw lovely outcome, I have been thinking about you since I read the thread and dreading coming back - in case. Hooray for you and your dear old girl.
