I have 2 ,13 week old kittens who are growing fast. They are too young to go out so have a litter tray. Can I ask how often you change the litter? What brand you prefer and why?
How do you deal with stinky litter ?
I remove poo each time I see it and top up the tray daily, but am finding I need to do a complete change every couple of days as it is solid with wee. Then it festers in a bag whilst waiting for the rubbish collection- not nice.
Currently using a Bob Martin's brand.
Any tips/ routines gratefully received.
I've only ever had adult cats before who simply went out' so this is all new to me.

oh, they are sharing bowls and litter, so they need a bowl each? Thing is they would just use each other's stuff anyway. They seem very happy sharing, there are no fights-yet.

A breeder I once visited used wood chip and her place stank!

Mine have a bowl each for wet food, a bowl each for dry food and a single water bowl. I have a silicone feeding mat for the food bowls to sit on. (they don't drink that much as they prefer the pond water!). They share an xxl litter tray as they used the same one when I had 2 smaller ones.

They do switch between bowls but with a bowl each they can eat at the same time without bumping heads

Cats best Okoplus is great, I love it. I bought a massive bag off zooplus which came with a free litter mat to stop them tracking the litter around the house and it works like a charm although I'd imagine some cats might not like the feel of the litter mats on their paws.

Cats best oko plus tracks very badly and we were finding it all over the house. I wouldn't use it again

I have a large mat to stop tracking and it works a charm.

I use a silicon one which is supposed to only be changed once a month though in reality I change it every two to three weeks and poo is scooped daily. Its alright but it does get a bit whiffy so wondering whether to change.

Went a got a much bigger tray, filled it up with the litter I already had and the kittens went bonkers. They leapt in before I could pour the litter out and were digging around with gay abandon. One lay down on it. They then both did their business!
Have ordered some stuff from Zooplus

The worry with kittens and clumping litter is licking it off their paws and it's more likely to block a narrow gut.

Not much else to add, I use plain old litter.

TearsOnTheGround · 05/06/2017 19:46

I used a clay one and used to empty it behind a bush in my garden and dig it in. I figured the clay would be okay for soil and it meant not having stinky bags of litter until my (fortnightly) collection.

We use Sanicat Gold. It is not the cheapest brand but seems to produce much less dust than some of the other brands. The dust is not good for your health and this is probably our main reason for buying this brand. It is also an ultra clumping litter so contains wees and the cat finds it easier to cover poos.

We typically clean the litter tray twice a day to remove wees, poos and litter immediately around the poos. Once in the morning and once in the evening before bed. She likes to go for poos after eating so we give her some time after eating her breakfast and supper to poop before we change the tray.

Cats Best Oko Plus for us here too - it's the only one I've ever used that genuinely traps smell like no other.

When the cats were kittens it was scooped once or twice daily and changed completely about once a week (three cats kept indoors for a few months before neutering.) Zooplus was the cheapest supplier.

We used the 'Breeze' system. The urine goes through a grid into pads that can be easily removed and changed, the poop is held up by the grid in a layer of ceramic gravel and can be scraped out. I think the ceramic gravel can be removed and disinfected occasionally. The only problem is when a cat has diarrhea and it slops through the gravel and grid. That is a mess to clean up.

There is also the Cat Genie Flushing cat toilet. That didn't work so well for three indoor cats as it takes 45 minutes to do a cleaning cycle and that always happened when one wanted to use it. One cat also thought it was a nifty cat bed and tried sleeping in it. It smelled of cinnamon though which was nice.
