Cat after surgery - massive e collar problem

I started a thread about my cat who had pelvic surgery and was resting in a cage. She's doing ok, but was walking on three legs earlier so we took her to the vets as a precaution - they're not worried and she has a check up on Thursday. But I mentioned she had licked her scabs (from the accident, not surgery wound) and the vet gave her a soft e collar to stop her doing this. She really freaked out - wet herself and tried desperately to escape. When we took her home she couldn't see, couldn't get around her cage and couldn't drink - she then tried to get in her bed, messed up and fell out heavily onto her hip/leg (which she just had repaired). It was so awful that we took it off so she would calm down and not do any damage to her leg. Is that ok? Does anyone have any experience of this? So worried about my girl!

Not surprised she freaked in one of those. Very stressful for you. If my cats have had collars put on by the vet, I've always removed them, cos they just look so glum & can't manage to do anything in them. I remember wrapping a t-towel round my cats middle after an op rather than leave the collar on her & she did fine.

Thank you for your reply, I feel more reassured. Might see if we can try covering like that instead. I very much don't want her to get an infected wound but if we hadn't gone in unplanned today she wouldn't have had a collar this week anyway, so hoping it will be ok. Might call vets tomorrow for advice, but it was so awful I hope we can see how it goes. Her sister died of FIP and this one has the coronavirus - always terrified stress will make it come on, and surgery/cage is stressful enough!

I've seen post-op cats dressed in baby gros to protect their wounds instead of collars, could you try that?

One of mine had a small cone after nose surgery. She was so distressed by it I I had to take it off her. The other one had one put on at the vet after jaw surgery. But apparently she looked so distraught they took it off. Fortunately she was very good and never touched the wound.

Will try a baby gro - but how do they go to the loo with one on? (Haven't had a baby so not quite sure how they work!)

You put their front legs through the arms. And button it up the back. I think you cut the legs off. Or you could try a baby shirt.
