Dirty cat bottom

Any tips? Long haired cat who despises being brushed and gets very aggressive. I've attempted clippers, brushing and a damp flannel, I can never get near enough.

I've tried booking a groomer but all the mobile ones near me have stopped taking on clients or cancel on me Angry

He smells so bad and I know it's making him miserable too

Most vets offer a grooming service. They can even sedate him a bit to keep him calm. I have a maine coon and he had to be held down by 3 vet nurses whilst another one clipped the fur round his bum and his tummy (which always gets matted no matter how much I brush him). Think it cost around £30

Ooh didn't know vets offered grooming. I don't really want to use sedation or make him travel if possible. But that's a good lay resort.

Mines a MC too, fluffy bastard.

I have to do our elderly cat every day. The only way that works is to get a large pad of cotton wool soaked in warm water, a palstic pot and some wipes, then to crouch down beside him on the floor, hold him by the scruff of the neck and very gently press on his neck which make shim lift his backside.

Then hold the cottonwool in place without wiping for a few seconds to, erm, soften the stuff that needs removing Wink. Then wipe very lightly and rapidly as often as you can with the cotton wool, throw it in the plastic pot, grab a wipe and wipe again, a bit more vigorously, talking in very soothing tones as you do it. Then give him a cat treat straightaway.

sorry for typos - plastic not palstic and makes him not make shim Hmm

FledglingFTB · 04/06/2017 12:54

I swear this is the the only cat I've known where scruffing doesn't immobilise, instead he attempts an alligator style death roll Hmm

Where about on the neck makes a cat raise their bottom? I've not heard of that technique

I just lift up the scruff and then when I've got a good grip on it gently push down on his neck by his collar bones. But he is a very laid back cat generally so maybe we're just lucky (though DH has given up as cat always escapes when he tries.)

millifiori · 04/06/2017 12:58

Not collar bones - shoulder bones! You know the bit where you apply the de-flea treatment?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 04/06/2017 13:03

ony thing that works for idiotcat is a complete wrap...large towel, under chin like a bib, and wrap, the aim is to end up like a sausage roll, head one end, yucky arse the other

you need a no nonsense person to hold wrapped cat firmly, some rubber gloves and some designated "cats arse" scissors.

My vets does it when I just need a few knots chopping off. I one e made the mistake of giving them Sheba as a treat. The vet felt with consequences if that when I realised it was beyond me!

One of my cats loves her nether regions being washed - very disturbing from my point of view!

My 2 long haired cats don't like being combed down below, but I somehow manage to do it quickly, so they don't realise it's happening before they start to wriggle. I put them up on a surface at my level, then comb them from the head and work my way down, undercarriage then very quickly their poo troosTM.

If you're brave enough, you can trim the fur, but it's a tricky job.

Want2beme · 04/06/2017 16:39

Or is that poo trews? - can't remember.

FledglingFTB · 04/06/2017 17:41

I haven't touched his belly since we got him, I value my digits too much.

As a temporary fix I've managed the following:

  • remove bottom kitchen draw
  • chuck treats to the back of the space
  • wait until furball squeezes in, bottoms up
  • attack the rear quarters with a slicker

It's worked okay, there's definitely still a pong though, I'm definitely going to have to get someone to shave him.
