Old cat's claws, or rather cuticles (if that's what they are...)

My old moggy has very thick claws. I can deal with those by a combination of careful trimming and peeling. (The reason I do it is otherwise the claws get so thick he can't retract them.) But, he also seems to have overgrown 'cuticles' on the underside of the claws, some completely filling in what would otherwise be a near-normal (for a cat) claw.
I know these are potentially tender, so what do I do?

I think it might be best to make an appointment with a vet nurse and ask them what to do about it. One of our old girls used to get very thickened overgrown claws which were a nightmare to trim, but I've not experienced the cuticle bit over growing.

My two oldies has this. I think it's a tricky but normal part of growing old.

I took one to the vet to get them trimmed.
