I can't believe it is a year today that my darling Troy died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy aged 5. I have mentioned him many times on here but it's only recently I posted a photo of him. Here are a couple more. In memory of Troy.

He was a lovely boy. It's hard to take onboard he could only have five years, but I'm sure your glad they were with you and he had a good life with you.

Rollypoly100 · 13/05/2017 20:34

Thanks Cozie, he was a lovely boy, ex rescue.

I lost my lovely boy earlier this year to the same. He was only 3. Still so sad about him - seemed so unfair. Can I ask, when did you know he had HCM?

Wolfiefan · 14/05/2017 21:48

Oh Troy was beautiful. That face.
Rolly what stunning markings.
They really worm themselves into our hearts don't they. Flowers

Needing he had a little cough and I whisked him down the vets. They at first thought he could have ruptured his diaphragm but could see his heart was enlarged and had fluid on his lungs so they referred to Bristol where they sadly gave the diagnosis.

He may not have been right before then but I had to work a lot of extra hours and didn't see him much and he would be lounging around or sleeping when I got home. Normal cat behaviour really.

I always recommend people have adequate insurance for their pets. From diagnosis until he died it cost about £3,600.

Flowers for you too.

My cat was possibly born with it, and was struggling to breathe one day when hecwas 1 so we took him to the emergency vet. They admitted him thinking he'd maybe had an injury. They phoned late that night telling us to expect a phone call in the night to say he'd died - they were that certain. Remarkably he survived and lasted another couple of years albeit on all sorts of medicines and ending up back at the emergency vets every few months. We did have good insurance for him thank goodness. When he died, he was admitted as usual struggling to breathe, but this time they couldn't stabilise him and he died later that day Sad.
PS. I was so glad for the insurance. Our last cat had lapsed insurance and of course he got very ill suddenly and cost us nearly 1k before dying. This taught us to get insurance the hard way.

We lost our beloved Corwen to HCM nearly a year ago. He was finally correctly diagnosed at about age 10 but I suspect was ill a while before this. He was almost dieing before a new vet realised what was wrong. After a scan costing £500 he was on ace inhibitor tablets and diuretics- lots of other tablets prescribed by the specialist vet but we didn't feel that giving lots of tablets each day was the right thing to do although Corwen was never uncooperative. Cost was a factor as well but I experimented and cut back on medication gradually until he was not taking anything. Had to be very observant but it worked. He had a completely normal, active and very happy life until suddenly suffering a saddle thrombosis at age 14 and was immediately put to sleep.

He was 25% Bengal,25%British silver tabby, 50% Oriental. Born in a cottage in Snowdonia and came home with us from a holiday in Wales aged just six weeks. He was the cat the children grew up with and he was wonderful.
Hope this little story may help anyone who's cat has just been diagnosed. When I tried to research feline heart failure he appeared to have about 90 days left if that!
Now we have Ben 100% Bengal who has such big boots to fill.
Our beloved animals always break our hearts in the end - and then we sign up all over again !
