Have a 8m old kitten he has just started going outside about 3 weeks ago and loves it thought this would mean him sleeping better at night.. it's almost worse! He will not be being let out at night so please no suggestions for that. He has free run of the house and some nights will sleep all night on our bed on spare bed but others oh my god grrrr he pisses around with phone chargers bites feet , will bring a sweet wrapper up from under sofa down stairs and play with it in bedroom... if it gets so bad I take him down stairs and shut door on to hallway but then he scratches door and pulls carpet back...
Have been up with him since 4.55 this morn in the lounge and he's perfectly happy when I'm here (partner in bed works v v long hours want him to have a lie in on a sat!)
If you've got this far thanku pls tell me I'm not alone and someone else's does this?!

Yeah I looked at the laser thing I think I might order one he has a few toys he has a little lion he lovessss to chase! My bosses are both vets and they agree it's fine too obviously when we got old it's a different story but they are very clean and it's no different to us holding our bladders over night .. their words. Haha yes 4.30 is pushing it I can
Cope with 5.30 wish it the usual but this morn was toooo early x

rioam the house at night and not expect to be woken up*

Wolfiefan · 06/05/2017 21:32

Is he neutered?
It's always a good idea to have a litter tray in case of accidents. Shit in your shoes is not a good start to the day!!!

Wolfiefan · 06/05/2017 21:33

Pressed too soon!
Plus if he's ever housebound or needs a stay at the vets or a cattery he will be used to one.

Maudlinmaud · 06/05/2017 21:38

My two year old neutered female behaves like this some nights but not all. She gets proper excited when we get ready for bed and zooms around the house, up and down the stairs like a crazy cat. Sometimes she bites feet in the middle of night which is annoying especially when you find it difficult to get back to sleep. But like I said it's not every night so we put up with it.
Sorry don't have any advice just sharing similar experience.

Good point Wolfie re. being housebound/ staying at vet/ cattery.

On occasions like Bonfire Night (and the run up), Diwali, New Years Eve I lock my outdoor cat indoors and get the litter box down. He hates fireworks Sad I make him as comfortable and secure as possible which includes providing a litter tray.

OP it's not a criticism at all but I'm surprised your bosses (vets) are recommending no litter tray at night. This query is asked frequently online and the answers are always to provide a tray overnight.

If nothing else you're protecting your cat's urinary health by preventing him having to hold it until morning and potentially developing a uti (common).

The cost and minor hassle of a mostly unused tray is surely preferable to your kitty being in discomfort (which isn't always noticable, cats are very good at hiding when they're in pain) and a hefty vet bill.

Something like this is fairly discreet and can be put away when not in use during the day:

Re. the laser, I ordered something like this from China for my beast. It was a big hit Grin
laser

He's gorgeous, beautiful coat. I would definitely have a tray if he's in overnight, so he's used to it and to stop accidents. Who knows if he might get an upset stomach or just need to pee.
We got our cat when she was 6 and after the first few months until about 2 or 3 years ago she rarely used her tray overnight but on odd occasions she did so no way would I not have one. It's essential now due to IBD and diabetes.
Lots of toys should keep him occupied as suggested already. Another good one is a bid with a hole in the top to climb in and out which also provides great photo opportunities.
He should calm down after neutering, if he isn't you really shouldn't let him out until he's had the snip.

Vinorosso74 · 06/05/2017 22:23

*box not bid

RubbishMantra · 06/05/2017 22:24

He does need an indoor litter box/tray. UTIs can be caused if they don't have one - say if they're ill, feel scared by a bully cat and feel safer toiletting indoors for eg. They'll hold it in - often causing crystals in their urethra, which can be fatal.

And to the poster who had a snipe at OP for asking advice, this board is for asking advice about cats. Confused

Eh? Sorry bit confused - were you telling me off for being sarcastic? Or is "Purple" somebody else? Confused I wasn't being sarcastic if that helps.

Glad the little one was ok last night. I'd still leave a litter tray out for him just in case. Enjoy!
