Young cat died suddenly

She was still just a kitten really - only about 8 months old.

Florence - she went out last night after her tea - didn't come back in, which was unusual, but not worryingly so. This morning, no sign of her. I have two other, older cats. They were there, but no Florence. Waited for a bit, fed them, then went to look for her.

She was lying on her side in the garden. Not a mark on her, and she looks just as if she dropped dead - maybe a heart attack?

I'm typing this through tears. She was such a wee sweetie, and she hasn't even seen a summer. Yesterday was a sunny day - like today - and she was running about, catching flies and being happy and lovely.

Can't believe she's gone.

This was her on Monday afternoon. Cuddled up with her buddy. She's the wee tortie.

This happened to one of ours. He was only 2. We originally thought he'd been hit by a car because he'd been found in the road. Until we realised that he was in the position he like to walk into a room and flop down in. He did t have a mark on him either. He always had slightly googly eyes and the day before he died I'd noticed they were more googly than usual so I think he had a stroke or something. Hugs and CakeBrewWineFlowersFlowersop, it's awful.

Aw I'm so sorry. The same happened to our cat last year...we found her one morning in the garden, dead but not a mark on her. She was white so any damage or injuries would have been fairly easy to spot.

We paid our vet for an autopsy (I can't remember what the pet version is) and the outcome was that she had been hit by a car. Apparently it's fairly common for there to be no outward signs of damage and for the adrenaline to keep them going for a minute or so, enough to sprint away. We were assured though that the injuries were such that she died very quickly.

Flowers for your loss xx

Are you sure poisoning wasn't the cause? Some nasty cat haters out there.

Worth a chat with the vet maybe?

StarHeartDiamond · 04/05/2017 16:07

She could have had a knock to the head -car, thug Sad (unlikely but possible) or a fall from a jump that she wasn't experienced enough to make. Or she could have had a stroke or similar. What a shame. I'm sorry for you op Flowers

Thanks.

At first I did think it might have been internal injuries after a car accident, and I did wonder about poisoning as well. But she looks exactly as if she was just walking along, tail in the air, and fell over onto her side. No signs of her having moved around or struggled after she fell - onto a recently dug border and no signs of her having moved at all after she fell. No blood, no ruffled fur, no scrapes on her feet or claws - nothing! Just a lovely wee cat - lying dead in the garden.

The vet suggested a stroke or heart attack. The only thing that was different at all was that yesterday afternoon, for a wee while, she did seem very sleepy - more than usual and as if she was struggling to keep her eyes open.

I took her to the vet, and they'll arrange for her to be cremated and I'll get her ashes back to bury in the garden. My son starts his exams tomorrow - he's at his dad's just now till Saturday - so I'll not tell him till he's here and I though having ashes to bury would help him. And I just couldn't dig a hole for her. That was what started me crying.

We had a not quite 2yo cat die suddenly last year, the vet determined he had had a heart condition. It's horrible losing a young cat OP, I'm so sorry Flowers

Snowdog37 · 04/05/2017 16:33

Our cat, a 3 year old, dropped dead of a heart attack last year. The vet said it's a fairly common thing in cats under 5, they have congenital heart defects that are asymptomatic until the heart just stops. It was heart breaking as she was my shadow. We have another cat too who is 14, purebred calico, and has no signs of ill health at all so it's just a lottery really. Just have to love them and spoil them for the time they are with us.

Seeingadistance · 04/05/2017 16:55

I'm sorry for all your losses - so sad, no matter the age of the cat.

Thanks for responding to my thread.

I don't know what to do with myself. I work from home, so at least I haven't had to face anyone today. But I've not got much work done either, and I'm getting more, not less, tearful as the day goes on.

I keep trying to remember that she was a happy wee soul, and that it must have been sudden that she wouldn't even know.

Oh! Tears again.

I think it's often cardiomyopathy? We lost one at 18 months old & never knew why. We found him in the woods nearby :(

Vinorosso74 · 04/05/2017 18:22

I'm so sorry. Such a beautiful girl and way too young to go Flowers

LaundryQueenHatesBunfights · 04/05/2017 18:28

She's so gorgeous. I'm sorry, I remember the heartache. The exact same thing happened to my Bonnie when she was 8 months old. That was 13 years ago SadI still have her brother now though Smile I'm so sorry for your loss. Cats have a way of just getting you right in the heart Flowers

TroysMammy · 04/05/2017 19:57

I'm sorry for your loss. It's a year next Wednesday that my darling Troy aged 5 died from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I feel lucky that he was diagnosed in the January and although I knew what the outcome would be we had an extra 4 wonderful and memorable months together. Flowers for you.

gingerpurrfect · 04/05/2017 20:30

Just over 3 weeks ago I also lost my little girl, aged just 4, to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I'm so sorry you, and many others, have suffered the same loss. Like troysmammy, my cat had been diagnosed and was on medication, but the suddenness of it all is still a terrible shock. The grief feels overwhelming at times, so I know exactly how you must be feeling. My thoughts are with you.

cozietoesie · 04/05/2017 21:17

My darling Oneago died at 8 - so much older than your girl although still a youngish cat. He was in seemingly rude health and just dropped dead one sunny morning. It was incredibly fast. I reckon your lass wouldn't have known much about it from what you said
.
A gorgeous wee thing she was.
