Is cheap tinned food so bad?

I do t want to bang on about various grain free foods she's liked then disliked over night just to say I'm sick of throwing it away hardly touched and I can't afford to keep putting lik e Lix on it twice a day. We've had all the brands including all the high end German ones. My question is if see is wolfing down the dry 85% meat grain free biscuits is there any harm in feeding her a tin of Sheba or is it counter productive? My friends give her siblings whiskas or Felix and they are thriving on that. They've never known any different. Is Sheba ok it seems to have lots of meat in it.

So should I start giving him wet food every day or just keep it as is? He does drink a lot as well, but I guess he has to with his predominantly dry diet. He does prefer his wet food so I'm sure I'll have no complaints from him. Grin

It's up to you really, if he eats it then there's no issue with giving him more! My cat doesn't really like wet food so every day is a struggle...

Two of our old cats absolutely refused anything in a tin. Even their beloved Whiskas (which we gave them from pouches). They would not eat it for days, would rather go and hunt mice! They always had biscuits out too, so they weren't starving, but kept nagging for a pouch of the same food that was from a tin................ Sigh :P

Jonsnow, try moving their water away from their food if they only eat dry. They may drink more if you do.

Jonsnowsghost · 05/05/2017 13:06

He drinks his water fine, he just doesn't like wet food! He will eat about half a pouch and that's ok as it's better than nothing (he loves the 'soups' though which he has occasionally but they are complimentary)

So.... how bad is whiskers kitten?

I was feeding my kitten some high meat % grain free German one but the kitten has totally gone off all the flavors.

I fed him a pouch of whiskers kitten and he wolfed it down.

Jonsnowsghost · 05/05/2017 14:15

If he eats it, feed it. It won't do him any harm and thousands of cats are fed on It! You can always re introduce the grain free higher meat later on in life Smile.
I don't think whiskas/felix deserve the terrible reputation they have - no they're not great ingredients wise but cats do fine eating them.

Kokusai · 05/05/2017 14:23

Thanks Jonsnowsghost I was getting terrible PRK (precious first kitten) guilt that I was feeding him the equivalent of a pack of crisps and a mars bar for lunch...

Jonsnowsghost · 05/05/2017 14:34

Grin no doubt some people will tell you that but realistically most cats are fine on it.
Some cats are so fussy that you can be pleased when they eat whiskas! I would always say that they should have wet food and any is better than none.

Kokusai, basically when it comes down to it, you have to give the little fusspots what they will eat, if it's not what we consider to be the best quality, then they have to have something - the protein quality might not be the best but if it's complete it should give them basically what they need. You can always try other options as they grow older as their tastes can change.

I've just lost my boy to CKD and other than the odd bit of chicken or cat treats, they've lived on food from the supermarket - both lived to be 17 (I still have one) and had lovely soft cats. They haven't had any help problems with could have been down to a wet supermarket diet.

Mine have Iams wet pouches, supplemented with trays or sachets of Sheba if they desire a midnight snack before I go to bed. I also feed them a quite expensive dry food which is sold in the local supermarkets. It must be German from the main language on it.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance :-)

I've been feeding him mostly wet with some dry down during the day but TBH he isn't that interested in the dry anyway. He is quite a good drinker - especially if he sees I've got myself a glass of water!
