Ideas needed to stop determined intruder coming in the house.

A new cat has arrived in the neighbourhood and is trying to claim our garden and house as it's own.

My two placid easy going cats are terrified of it.

We have a lockable cat flap but a few times it's forced its way through in the night. Have been putting the covered litter tray in front of it to act as another barrier, but last night the cat was determined and pushed this out of the way to get in. Girlcat was so terrified she wee'd herself.

Both cats are now too scared to go outside once or gets past about 8pm. We used to have the cat flap as entry only when we went to bed and then they'd be locked in for the night when they came in. Can't do this anymore as the intruder cat can't get out and just smashes through the cat flap.

Cats are normally locked in the kitchen at night and have spent the last week pressed up against the window looking out nervously for the cat.

My plan of action is now to:

Wipe the outside step with orange essential oil to deter it.
Block catflap from the outside with a physical barrier.
Keep the cats in a different room overnight so they can't look out into the garden.

Whenever the cat is in the garden dh runs chasing it clapping his hands to scare it away.

Any other ideas?

What about a motion-sensor cat repellant, which sprays water? I've had a look online and it seems you can buy one for about £20, so not as expensive as I thought. Have never tried one myself, mind.

You'd have to make sure you turned it off in the morning, else I don't think your two would be too pleased with you!

I'd go for that before / along with the microchip flap. As impressed as I am with mine it would be a very expensive breakage.

we had this. DH slept downstairs and locked cat flap so once cat got in it could not get out. Then on another time squirted with water and it legged off (cat flap not locked that time). cat never came back after the time it was locked in for 5. sounds cruel but my cats were petrified so necesaary.

jim bulard no dont spray the lemon juice solution round your hallway as yes that will probably upset your own cats, what you need to do is spray it round the fences outer boundary of your garden to deter the marauder from coming into your territory, as your cats know thier home it wont put them off coming and going and keeping your cats in for a few days at night and blocking the cat flap from the intruder will probably make him go somewhere else

Intruder cat turned up like clockwork as dusk fell.

Dh was ready staked out in the garden with the supersoaker and got him as he snuck under the gate.

Cats are stressfree as didn't witness any of it. Cat flap blocked up with tray of water garden side.

Hopefully a few nights of this will do the trick :o

I hope so. It's horrid to see them stressed, isn't it?

Another vote for microchip cat flap - ours works perfectly. A warning though that they can be difficult for the cat to learn to use - fine for our (too clever for her own good) Bengal but may not be ideal for the more simple pusses amongst us :)

We have a SureFlap one - they seem to be the market leaders.

MissisBoote · 02/05/2017 07:30

misericord Is the sureflap one pretty indestructible?
Our intruder is quite a brute.
All calm this morning. Pretty sure he didn't come back and try and get in as the cats would've smelt his scent on the cat flap.

Oooh well done DH!

If he catches him a few times I'm sure brute cat will just give up.

MissisBoote · 03/05/2017 09:05

Brute cat was a no show last night and no sign of him being near the cat flap this morning.

Dh is going to sit out for a few more nights to make sure he's not going to come back.

Cats are much happier Smile
