Cat colours and parentage

My lovely boy is three today! A very handsome tabby. Which got me thinking about his parents..
So, would either mom or dad have been a tabby?
The same with black or ginger cats or whatever? One parent would have to be black or ginger?

Oh that makes me feel better. She gave me his pedigree papers so I was happy enough that it was all above board.
She kept the queens and kittens in the house and a large run outside for the toms. I met both Ozzy's parents and they were lovely.
