Gincat is on her last paws

My old friend is passing away. She's 19 and I have had her since she was 5 (rescue cat). She's not been herself for a few days and I took her to the vet yesterday expecting to be told to have her PTS.

The vet said to try her with painkillers and anti-inflammatories to see if that would help her. She had a good day yesterday but today she has been lethargic, barely able to move and slowly fading away.

I called the vet who said she's not in pain because of the meds and she doesn't seem to be in distress so it wouldn't be cruel to let her pass away naturally. My old lady hates strangers so I thought the stress of a vet trip wouldn't be the ending she'd want.

So she's curled up in a blanket next to me while I sob onto my ipad keyboard.

DH isn't a cat person so I just needed to reach out to some people who get it. It's exactly the sort of passing she would have chosen (on her terms, no fuss, no vets, somewhere she knows and after a day of having the sun on her fur in the garden) but I'm still a mess.

Anyway, thanks for reading

Thank you all for your kind words,

Little Gincat has passed away. In the room that she loved, quietly and knowing I was right next to her. Night night my old friend,

There will be a Gincat shaped hole in our lives for a very long time.

I really appreciate everyone's kindness

Xx

Hugs for you and Gincat. My Nan's beloved cat died curled up to her aged 20 and my Nan died a week later. It sounds like she's had a wonderful life Flowers

I'm so sorry for your loss (and for the losses of so many others on this thread.) I hope you can find some comfort in knowing that she was surrounded by your love and was in peace at the end. Wishing you strength at this painful time - please be kind to yourself. Thinking of you.

Good night Ginger. Sounds like a peaceful end to a lovely day.

So sorry for your loss. So glad you were able to be there for the end FlowersGin

Stupid autocorrect!

Gincat. Not Ginger.

Big hugs to you, I am in a similar position our 18 year old cat, has gone down hill within the last few months, mobility etc. it breaks my heart to think of losing him. I can completely understand how you must be feeling. Wishing you all the best.

GRW · 03/04/2017 07:20

I am sorry to hear this, but glad it was so peaceful for her. RIP little GincatFlowers

GinIsMySaviour · 03/04/2017 09:24

Thanks everyone. Best wishes for my little cat mean a lot!

We wrapped her up in her favourite blanket and snuggled her into her favourite box (she really loved cardboard boxes) and buried her under a big rose bush in our garden which was her favourite spot to catch the morning sun.

At least we all got to say goodbye and know she didn't suffer.

God I feel pathetic being so floored by the passing of such a tiny thing - especially given she had had a long life and peaceful death. But she was a good friend and we will all miss her.

(Although I have doubts about my dog who has opportunistically hoovered up all the cat food already!)

I am going to have to have a strong tea or three to get through today and not cry on the phone to clients!

Thanks again for the hand holding

Xx

Sorry she's gone but it sounds very peaceful for her. RIP Gincat Flowers.
Our neighbour's cat died suddenly when she was 18 and a half. He found her one morning on her favourite chair-he said she looked relaxed and had been peaceful which he took comfort from.

Threetoedsloth · 03/04/2017 12:25

They leave their pawprints on our hearts. RIP little Gincat. I hope you have an easy day at work.

Wolfiefan · 03/04/2017 12:28

Oh bless Gin. I'm so sorry you've lost her but glad it was peaceful and she was where she felt safest and loved.
They do leave a hole.
Run free over the rainbow bridge gin girl. Flowers

I'm so sorry, Gin. At least it sounds as if she had an easy passing.

GinIsMySaviour · 03/04/2017 15:33

Thank you all. I was just flagging with the 'don't cry at clients' resilience and you've all helped make me less of a sobbing mess.

I'm so sorry Flowers

ElizaDontlittle · 03/04/2017 16:30

I'm so sorry - she was your feline friend and it's totally natural to mourn our friends!
I think you let her have the perfect death, given that there has to be such a thing, and a pretty wonderful life as well.
Take care of yourselves Flowers

GreenPolishToGo · 03/04/2017 17:10

Poor Gin Flowers It's alright to be a sobbing mess. She was your friend for many years. Of course you are heartbroken.

I hope it is some comfort to know she had a happy life with you and a very peaceful death.

9GreenBottles · 03/04/2017 18:14

A good life with you, and a good passing, but it doesn't ease the sorrow Flowers

wtffgs · 03/04/2017 18:19

Goodnight Gincat 🐱

I'm glad you had a lovely, calm end.

OP they certainly do take up a lot of heartspace! 🌷

GinIsMySaviour · 03/04/2017 20:06

Lovely and indulgent MNers, can I share one more story about my GinCat?

When I was dating my now DH, I split up with him because I thought he was generally feckless and impractical despite being great on many other levels.

GinCat then went through a tough time healthwise and seeing how caring he was with her despite the fact that GinCat and I had moved out to our own girls-only flat, made me rethink and we slowly got back together through co-cat-caring.

So really, GinCat is responsible for the best thing in my life which is DD who wouldn't have come into the world without DH and I getting back together.

Well done and thank you GinCat, what a very clever little cat you were

Lovely. Thanks for sharing that. Smile

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/04/2017 20:10

I'm glad you were able to give her a good ending, not all of them get that.
